Baby Tropidophis melanurus

kingtrop Nov 29, 2009 05:16 PM

I was wandering around my snake room this afternoon and noticed one of my young female Trops was in the middle of birthing a litter.
She had 7 live and 3 still born. A couple of weeks ago one of
my old females had 17 still born and 3 slugs. That was a drag. There is still 2 or 3 left that should be giving birth in the next week or so.
The female that had the young today was born here a few years ago, I wish I had access to a digital camera so I could post photos.

Hello John.

Congrats on the litter.

Sadly one of my females also gave me a litter of 17 still born.
But that´s how it goes.

Regards

Peter.

Tough break on the stillborn but congratulations on the live ones. Best of luck with the remaining gravid Tropes.

Best regards,
Jeff Murray

Thanks,
the two for sure older females are restless and acting like they will drop any day now, I am just hoping for better odds with those two. I didn't get around to pairing last year, and I paired 6 females this year, they all seem to be taking longer than they should to drop. It was also an off year for everything I paired, late eggs, late births, I still have a Brazilian rainbow that is questionable, she dropped 5 slugs the other night and is still wicked fat.
I am hoping that my Angulifer and Alsophis breed this time around. Pete, any ideas on why your trop spilled the still borns?

Hello John.

I am unsure why she dropped still born babies. She had a good litter in 2007, so it was not her first time.

If my haetianus dont drop anything soon then i will not be making Tropidophis this year. She is really late compared to 2007. But still looks pregnant.

Cheers

Peter.

CONGRATS, they look great. I used to breed those and many other species of Troph's back in the day. Did you ever have this phase of melanuras or know which part of Cuba they occur in. I bred this locale specific melanuras as well. Wish I had NEVER got out of them...

I have some orangeish ones (not as orange as the one pictured) that I collected in Habana Provence and in Vinales,Pinar del Rio Provence. And I also have the yellow striped kind (again, not as yellow as the one pictured...as well as some of them being patterned to varying degrees, these were collected in Villa Clara Provence. That is as far East as I have traveled on the island.
It's too bad you didn't keep any Tom, you had some real nice ones and they fetch a real good price these days.
