Pairing Question

KevinM Dec 01, 2009 03:42 PM

Hopefully this post will wake up the corn forum a bit LOL!! Its been awfully quiet lately. I have a female amel blood (fire) in brumation and I am not sure what I want to pair her to this spring. My male options are a snow, a striped butter, or an Abbott/Love line okeetee. Many pros and cons. The snow and butter would obviously produce visual amels when bred to her with the babies being het for multiple things depending on which male used. I am also debating pairing her with the okee male just to outbreed and produce "better" normals to back breed with the male and possibly start my own okee line. I love the way blood genes influence normal corns. Decisions, decisions!! I am probably going to go with the striped butter which will produce more variety with the hets when bred back to each other. Not sure. Any suggestions?? Fire Away!!

I'd get a male bloodred. They're relatively inexpensive and the result would be all bloodreds het for amel. None of those other combinations are going to give you anything other than amels and hets - and both aren't worth producing unless you have some long-range breeding plans with the offspring (they wouldn't have much market value).

Breeding it to an Okeetee will only dillute the Okeetee's charactersitics.

Tim, thanks for the reply. Long range is not necessarily a problem and I guess I look at selling amels just as easy as selling bloods right now. I could be wrong on that assumption and would appreciate your take on that situation. I do have a cb09 male lavender motley blood that will eventually be paired with this gal in the future. I figured breeding her to the butter stripe would eventually produce sulfurs if I am correct, along with a host of other possible morph combos. I agree the hets would be hohum though. Still, a couple of holdback females would have a TON of genetic potential. I quess thats what make corns so dang fun LOL!!

I suppose sell-ability depends on who your customers are. If you have local pet stores or shows where you think you can sell normals and amels, maybe it's an OK idea. But the price of normals and amels (which are produced in mass numbers) is lower than that of a bloodred 100% het for amel, which isn't as common.

From what I've seen, amels and normals sell for about $10-$15 (and sometimes less - if they sell at all). You also need to look at the price of shipping. For lower priced snakes it often costs more to ship than the price of the animal, and you'll find people generally don't want to pay that.

Even if you sold bloodreds 100% het for amel for $30 each (they'd probably sell for more than that), it's double or triple what you'd make with amels and normals. The way I look at it, if you're going to go through the trouble of reproducing the snakes, you might as well make some money - as well as something that will have a higher demand then normals and amels.

Don't get me wrong, I like normals and amels, but if you want breeding advice, I'd get a male bloodred.

Tim/Jeff,

Thanks for the input. Tim, I see your point and it makes good sense. Jeff, if you want to stud that male out, I would be more than happy to pair up with my female LOL!! I actually have a friend locally that has a nice male fire and I may talk to him about stud loan.
