jessweet49 Dec 02, 2009 08:06 AM

I just received two female '09 boas yesterday. Looking at them this morning and they have little red lice looking things running along them.... is that mites or? Do i want to treat it now when they are stressed from the move or wait until they get settled in? never had any creepy crawlies on my things before, need advice!

Hmmmm, never saw red ones before. Unless maybe just fed? Snake mite tha have not fed yet are pretty much transparent and very small making tem darn near impossible to see. Once they have fed their bellies are dark from the blood.

Here's what they look like.....

I would treat right away, the longer you wait, the more they have a chance to reproduce and spread.

no, these were definitely all red. I looked online and found things called like "spider mites" that were red, but they are plant eaters. I went ahead and disinfected the cage and soaked the snakes in the tub. Noticed some fall off. Maybe they were just a humid loving bug, the guy who had them before had them in a tub that was very humid and looked a little dirty. luckily these girls where in a complete different house away from my other snakes, nothing like a good quarantine, just have to be careful I don't carry them somewhere.

There are red mites, I've seen them only a few times, but they were feeding on the reptiles they were on for sure. I've seen them on iguanas & swifts. Red mites are round & slow moving when full of blood just like the black ones. I'd get rid of them as soon as possible if I were you.
