What do you guys do (besides the obvious

cbmorphs Dec 03, 2009 08:53 AM

)when you already have way more baby Boas than you need, but still want to produce exciting new Boa Morphs?

My problem is, I already have 150 plus babies I need to sell and haven't had time to do so because of work! On the other hand, I have an awesome line up of adult female Boas more than ready to go, right now!

In this market there's so many routes you can go, but you could soon find yourself out of space and time! It's a difficult question I've been asking myself and figured it would be nice to hear others opinions.

It would be nice to produce what I'm after this year, but I'm already short on time. What would you guys and girls do and "has" or "is" anybody else in this similar predicament?

I've seen similar topics pop up about the market being flooded with various locale specific Boas and Boa Morphs. So I wonder just how many other people are sitting on 100 and up yearlings and 09 babies yet to be sold?

It would be nice to be able to slow down a little bit and enjoy the hobby a little more, instead of race, race, race to be the first to produce the latest and greatest Boa Morph!

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I'm off to the grind stone!

Chaz Neely

My favorite from 09 season!

I love that snake Chaz. Be strong and sit on them. When these guys blow out 200 animals to wholsalers at a clip because they need to pay for that big wharehouse they have their snakes in, it kills us all. Or when a guy undercuts everyone else and complains that his bathroom needs remodeling. Things like that kill it all for everyone. You have great animals and I think they will sell no matter what. Especially when next years babies start popping out. In my opinion, they will sell and if they are yearlings, so be it. Best of luck. Mike Panichi

Chaz buddy,
I have to say I agree with Mike on this one. You do have awesome animals, and I know first hand cause I picked up 4 of your 'genetic bombs' from you this summer. BTW -how is the Motley quad het doing for ya pal. Give me a call, I may be able to help take a couple more off your hands

Hey Dave, The Motleys doing great and growing like a weed on rat fuzzies already! I can't wait to see what she produces....some day! I know I have plenty of time for planning what to breed to her... as long as I have room then! The rate I'm going I won't have room to produce anymore, if I don't start taking the time out to try and sell some! lol I can't complain about work, currently I'm one of the few builders around my area with work... thank god for that! Now if I could just get a week off, to get some new pics taken and ads placed.

Thanks
Chaz

cbmorphs Dec 03, 2009 11:27 AM

I agree with what you say, but I'm not sure I want to keep sitting on all these little guys, that will soon be big guys! Not to long from now and they'll be big monsters, with big appetites!

Thanks for the complement, she's definitely my favorite from this year! I do have quit a few others too, but no pics to share yet...

If you don't have time to write up an advertisement, how do you have time to produce more animals and take care of them? Or the animals you already have?

IMO, you either have the time and are just putting off selling them for whatever reason, or you should look into wholesaling so that you can hive the remaining animals the attention they deserve.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. jb

It's not that I don't have time to take care of them, but the time I lack to do other things in life. I have the bare minumum in time to do what I do now. I just don't know if it's worth it to try and make another breeding season happen and then have that much less time on my hands. I would more than likely have to hire a part time helper to help me take care of the animals I'd be producing this season. My question is, would it be worth all that just to try and be in the rat race?

I'm starting to think not! I think it would be nice to down size and just stay focused on a few projects. But then, before you know it everyone and their brothers doing the same thing and you have 150 plus babies on hand to sell!!!

Out of the 70 to 150 Boa's I could possibly produce, more than likely 20 or so of them would be keepers.

I didn't ask this question so that I be made to look stupid!
I just wanted to know if anyone else has similar problems and what they might or might not do.

Seeing how the market is a little on the slow side, I think my question is one I'm sure many of you ask yourself??? Or maybe nobody really thinks about the consequences and they just keep producing more and more every year. I don't know, maybe I am stupid for being in this money pit! I do know one thing, it hasn't panned out to be all that was sold to me when I dumped THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of dollars into this hobby/business!

Maybe your a lot smarter than most of the dummies like me! lol

Piece OUT! bro!

Hey Chaz....it's been a while.

It is just plain tough right now, even if you had the time the market and economy are like frozen molasses right now.

I can not give you advice btu will lend an opinion, I have the potential to put together quite a few animals this year and several of those are ones that I have been waiting on. I will pair select boas this season.

I am more than prepared to with tubs and time to take care of any that I might produce, sounds like you are in the same boat except for the fact you have morphs and that market can change with the wind.

I hope all goes well which ever you choose

Hey Joel,

I agree with you on everything you said and I've been thinking about not even breeding any of my animals this year. It would give some of them another year to mature. It would also give me a chance at having more time next summer to enjoy things for a change, like going off roading(Jeeping), fishing and ect, ect...

If anything, I might just put 2 or 3 pairs together and see if I get lucky!

Thanks,

Chaz

KaiYudSai Dec 06, 2009 07:36 PM

This is a good example of why I've never been into morphs..... You always produce lots of boa to get a handful of really quality stuff.... then you have to dump off the ones that can't be classified as 100% hets.... I really think this is one of the reason the market is flooded..... everytone is chasing the morph buzz... producing thousands of "junk" boas to get the next hottest thing... I guess there is always a market for wholesale grade boas... but eventually it will cut into everyone's piece of pie.... I really believe people should only produce what they know they can sell... or are completely prepared to care for all offspring if they dont sell them..... If you bring an animal into the world... you have to take responsibility for it's well being

I'm only putting a few pairs together this season, & that sucks because what if they dont breed, or the females slug out, but I feel its the responsible thing to do. I produced a bunch of really nice looking normal Colombian boas this year & had no choice but to sell some of them off cheap because I am set up to hold a bunch of babies & yearlings, but not set up to hold more bigger boas & the way it was looking thats what was going to happen. I'de rather not produce as many boas then have to sell babies so cheap. It made me sick to my stomich to sell animals that live for 20 years & get over 6 ft long for $25.00, I wont put myself in that position againe. I know what you mean about not having time too, If I had all my 09s still I wouldnt be able to produce any for 2010 because I wouldnt have the time to give all of them the best care & still do the other things I enjoy doing in live.

I have to say some of your photo's are really interesting and could or should be framed and sold, for an extra income! But then there goes that hobby too, some things are better off left a hobby and not a source of income! When hobbies are turned into income it takes some of the fun out of it, but then the extra money is good too! It's hard to believe some of the animals you get to photo, that's pretty cool. Even though some of your photographed subjects could no doubt kill a person! Just like many other things in nature, they won't harm you unless you disturb them. What most people don't understand about that is, they really won't and even then they're just defending themselves.

Believe me, I know what you mean about selling animals for less then they're worth! I did that a couple of months ago when I had time and now that I look back on it, I wish I had a few of those animals back even though I'm strapped for time...

Thanks,
Chaz

Chaz,
Thanks for the compliment

Dan, that's just freaking awesome. You have to send that to me (kindly if you would), so I can wall paper that on my screen saver! How the heck do you get these kinds of shots?

You must "LITTERALLY" be surrounded by reptiles!lol What, do you live out in the middle of no where? must be nice! I could just about here what my neighbors are saying next store with my windows and theirs up! It's nice to have close neighbors sometimes, but I'd much rather live somewhere like where you live. Plus it's been really cold here lately, sucks big time when you work outside and snows bound to fall any day!

Anyways, cool pictures!

Thanks for sharing them too, at: constrictors@comcast.net

Tough call. I would say focus on what you love the most. Too many animals will make it too much of a job. You know as well as I that the market will always dictate the price. Using a wholesaler who ships overseas is one way, but not always an option. Free market is just that "FREE". Do what you must to lessen the burden my man and begin enjoying this great hobby again. Too hard to make money on projects that are 3 years ahead of us. You have great animals that will sell. If moving them is what is best for you, then do it. Thanks

cbmorphs Dec 03, 2009 01:12 PM

Hey Dan,

I'm glad to hear so many others opinion on this. I've been really stressing lately on time and not really being ready to make more animals. It's made it kind of hard to enjoy one of my favorite hobbies/past times, Boas!

When ever I've talked to people outside the loop/realm of Boa fanatics, I get negative responses! "Family"!, what do you do about them people sometimes?!?! But then most normal people don't think like us Reptile keepers! lol It's nice to hear what you want to hear from some place like these forums! Otherwise I think many of us would truly feel alone in what we do, in our cool hobby!

By the way, the Motleys are doing awesome! I just fed them their first rat fuzzy-ish/pinkie yesterday. The switch may be a little early, but I think it's good for their growth! That male is off the hook and if it weren't for my Hypo Arabesque het Bloody Sunglow, he'd be my favorite right now, well one of them!

Thanks,
Chaz Neely

Thanks Chaz. Good to hear they are doing well. I have 2 gravid girls right now. I hope to get one or two more gravid this season. I am letting most of my het animals go for recession like prices with some success, but I dont like to sell the visuals or advertise them at low ball prices.

Other than my hobby with the snakes, I go to school for Diagnostic Sonography as well as I am a Recruiter in the Marine Corps. I have been in the Marines for 5 years now and finally being back state side I have been able to enjoy my animals and expand my collection to around 40 or so Adult/Sub-Adult animals.

While my job does keep me busy I do find time for the Boas usually staying up a little later and spending a little extra time on weekend. It is all worth it in the end!

My job is rough...here we are in Korea...

With the Republic of Korean Marines

And clearly hard at work in Australia

And a little down time in Japan...

Sounds like you go through a little sacrifice to enjoy keeping Boas too... Some people may think were crazy for doing the things we do to keep these beautiful creatures, but what do they know they're not Boa fanatics.

I don't know if it was under good conditions, but it looks like you got to see some cool places? Nice pictures too!

That Jungle I got from you turned out to be pretty cool. The only bad thing is he likes to bury himself really good in the Aspen shavings. He's got me a couple times this way, because I thought he escaped. The first time he got me I literally thought he escaped and I ended up looking for him for about an hour. The bad thing about that is, I don't keep him in the reptile room so if he did actually escape I'd pay hell to find the little sh$t!
When I did find him, he was on his way out of the cage because I actually left the cage open after I thought he had already escaped! lol

Thanks,
