Tortoise-safe plants

sterling365 Dec 04, 2009 10:17 PM

I'm redoing my little redfoot's enclosure and was wondering if anyone could tell me if the following would be safe to put in:
Sansevieria
Dracaena
Warneckii
Cholorophytum
Peperomia
Mondo Grass
Cat Grass Seed (Oat, Barley, Wheat)

I more or less just went to Lowe's and browsed their garden section. There is someone on here that has a KILLER enclosure with live plants - they use potting soil as a substrate. I was just wondering if anyone knew which type was the safest. I guess I'm thinking that fertilizer can't be good for torts, but when I asked for a soil with no fertilizer, the lady at Lowe's looked at me as if I were crazy!

Also wondering about ferns, such as rabbit's foot fern.

Hi, unless there's a horticulturist out there, you may be better off searching a list for edible plants for tortoises and cross referencing it with your list. You can use top soil in the enclosures(most dont have fert. in them)simply remove your plant from the pot without disturbing the dirt and bury in the top soil. Hope this is a start for you.

Anyone have any advice on what plants they've used successfully int their indoor enclosures?

Hi, I have used pothos and aloes. They will certainly pick at and eventually destroy the pothos but they leave the aloes alone. I have not branched out to any other plants yet.
