Do single Ackies do well (versus a trio)

Fireproof Dec 05, 2009 10:30 AM

I see so much talk about people's groups of Ackies and understand it's entertaining and educational to see their interaction and hierarchies established, etc.

But can a single Ackie do fine by himself, healthwise? Can it still thrive or does it "need" the interaction from a buddy or two?

ACKIES WILL DO FINE BY THEMSELVES. MOST PEOPLE PUT GROUPS TOGETHER WITH THE INTENT ON BREEDING OR SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE SO DELIGHTED WITH THEIR FIRST ACKIE THEY GET HOOKED AND WANT MORE. EITHER WAY YOU GO THEY ARE A GREAT LITTLE MONITOR AND A JOY TO KEEP! BEST OF LUCK!

I think a well socialized pair or trio is the best choice. It doesn't require much more cage space, but mentally and physically, I think it is much more beneficial to the animals to have a social group.

Robyn is keeping them in trios something you do with all monitors or just ackies because for my savs it was a disaster. I only keeep monitors singly now.

We have had success with many species keeping them in socialized group.

But socialized is the key word : )

Multiptle males won't work well (or at all), and "bull" males often don't work well, as they hassle and/or constantly breed cagemates as well. We have seen that Bull male problem in Leopard Gecko groups as well.

Raising the group up from hatchlings is the best way to achieve a well socialized group. But just keeping three monitors together doesn't guarantee any success, there are certainly other subtleties to it.

That said, I feel a well socialized and cared for group is more mentally healthy than a single animal.

I was not able to do it with my savs I must have done something wrong. Mine must all be males they fought constantly. Territorial as hell. I initially had them together as hatchlings but they eventually all were seperated.

Hello Elidogs,
Yes, you have to be prepared to seperate and still house aggressive monitors individually. And, any sex can "have after" any sex... This is why pairing up giant monitors can be very challenging- you must have the space and each cage in peak running condition... Best to You- Mike S
