Missing toenails?

rustynail777 Dec 05, 2009 07:17 PM

Is it common for Cyclura to be missing toenails?I know they can get ripped out on hardware cloth ect.
Do they usually grow back?

I have an opportunity to adopt a yearling female Cuban ,she is missing toenails on her front claws, her toes are still there and there seems to be a little bit of nail coming back on some.

She seems healthy and has been on a good diet from what I know of.But if the nails dont come back will it impair her alot in the future?
Thanks

they will grow back if the quick is still there. check closely. If they dont grow back it will have no ill effect on the lizard. They lose them in the wild and even toes and it doesnt slow them down. Its really just an aesthetic thing.

It might be. I couldn't be sure though. Looks like it happened a while ago. Maybe some one else can jump in on
this thread, sorry

The nails likely will grow back BUT so what if they don't. It will NOT impair the lizard in any way. I have many lg breeders missing whole toes and it doesn't impair them. Unless it plays card games or sleight of hand magic tricks it WILL NOT STOP IT FROM DOING ANYTHING IT NEEDS TO DO...LOL

I will say this check out the shed skin still on the toes. If you don't remove that over time it will constrict the blood flow and even cut it off and the toes will become necrotic and die and fall off. That is a bad sentence in terms of sentence structure but nonetheless the truth. ALWAYS WHEN THEIR SHEDDING CHECK THE TOES AND MAKE SURE NO SHED IS LEFT ON AS THAT'S THE MAIN REASON MOST CAPTIVE CYCLURA ARE MISSING TOES...THANKS and that's your real problem not toenails....

Aside from snared carpet fibers cutting off circulation and rips that occur when jumping from top of a screen when a claw gets hooked, Some missing claws are out there for the following reasons: One owner was cruely cutting them off so his cyclura clan could not climb...these lizards are hardy and live a long time, so they are probably still living somewhere. Juvenile Nubila hybrids sometimes nip each other's toes off if they are left unmonitored in a large clutch. Also occurs when a smaller female cyclura is left unmonitored with larger agressive male. The nails can grow back. It looks to me like a no regrow from the foto you posted...but who cares. It is an estetic issue, and your lizard will be fine without it.
