The Mangroves venom has shown to be pretty toxic in some cases. How ever they have an ineffective delivery system. Every snakebite can cause serious problems if not taken care of properly. If your truly considering the Mangrove make sure you do your homework, Ensure that its legal where ever you are. Read up about the bites and husbandry of the snake. and most of all in my opinion you need to treat it like any other venomous snake, with the up most caution and respect as it could inflict serious damage, and use the proper handling tools and tactics.

Why not try something like the Sulawesi Rat snake, or some of the other old world rat snakes or some of the other python or boas. I'm not trying to steer you clear of the Mangrove snake, it is a beautiful snake, but at the same time I believe that people really underestimate it.

thanks i have tongs and stuff because i try to catch venomous sometimes. i know mangroves arent really the type of snake you can handle but i didnt know they were so toxic. ill probably look into the old world rat snakes. by the way could i keep an old world rat in the same cage as a yellow rat.

I wouldn't advise keeping two differnt species of any snake together, I think its just asking for trouble.

There hasn't been any reported human deaths from the Mangrove snake, but studies do suggest it's pretty powerful stuff, plus there is always a chance of having an allergic reaction to it. The delivery system may be in effective but I would not want to chance it myself.

As for myself I check out the other snakes section on classified. I always like to pick up things you don't see to often. I just saw an add for a 1.3 group of Spilotes that were pretty reasonably priced. I don't know much about them but I'm always willing to research and look into as well as try new things.

im probably gonna stick with non venomous for now because im only 13 and my parents wont let me get one. although i love taking those chances i went up north and caught a copperhead my first venemous. im probably the 13 year old that would do that

Yea, you need to get some more years under your belt before you start collecting venomous. Accidents happen and sometimes help isn't close.

With whatever you get just take the time to study up and learn about that species.

good luck.

Just a question, and don't think I'm trying to be mean: Are you feeding and cleaning and handling those snakes all your own? Without your parents helping? I think 8 is a big enough number for now, let them grow up a few years before you think about getting another.

Another thing to just think about, what will happen in 5ish years when you need to go to college? Will you expect your parents to take care of your snakes, or will you have to sell them off?

hondo1199 Dec 09, 2009 03:09 PM

no help from my parents in fact there actually scared of them except for my cali king. im not sure whats gonna happen when i go to college but im not selling them im sure my parents could feed them and clean thier cage and water because they helped me clean them when i first got them. and im not like a normal kid ive been 6 feet away from a bear on purpose. the only thing keeping me from venomous is i dont have a permit and my parents.

HogBilly Dec 09, 2009 04:09 PM

Your parents don't like the snakes but you're fine with thrusting yours at them for four years or longer when college arrives?

This doesn't exactly inspire a sense of maturity. And bragging about being so close to a bear means it was either a safe situation (caged bear, trained bear, dead bear), or you're a fool.

well i know it was stupid being that close to the bear and it was alive i have pictures of lots of bears in my neigborhood. i wasnt trying to be mean when i was saying that. and im going to college in florida.

There are reasons you must be 18 to buy a venomous snake. there is also a reason you must be 18 to vote. I would not call a 13 year old a 'fool' or anything else but i would say you sound a bit immature. Its awesome your in the reptile hobby and as addictive as it is dont overdo it. Death is only one concern when dealing with a venomous snake. dismemberment and permanent damage is almost always the case (if you survive) loss of fingers or even limbs are very common. I know you cant talk someone out of something they are set on so the only advice i can give you is if you want a venomous snake get one that is native. that way the hospital is likely to have sufficient amounts of anti venom. *shakes his head*

if you want something safe and exotic check out venomoid inc. a cobra with no venom is certainly exotic.

also i got into snakes when i was fifteen and by the time i was 18 i had 7. then i found out my girlfriend was pregnant. being a teen parent is hard enough without taking proper care of 7 others. im not saying this will happen to you but i wasnt expecting it either. i almost had to give up the hobby at one time (but now as i type this my 3 year old son is sitting on my lap). but if i were you i would really think about letting all my snakes grow up before getting more.

That probably isn't the best idea either. They are still illegal where venomous snakes are not allowed. They should still be treated like a venomous snake. I would hate to find out they hard way that the surgery wasn't successful or done properly, and that doesn't even touch the surface of the ethical and moral thoughts that many people have on venomoids.

Agreed. I can't believe I just saw someone tell a young kid to get a venomoid.

Not to mention the serious business puncture wounds, even with no venom.
