Sex in BRB

Coach Dec 07, 2009 07:11 PM

How deep do males probe in BRB? I have 3 animals that all probe between 4-6 scales deep.

....The Boa and Python breeding "Bible" says female BRBs probe 3 and males probe 11. However, some females do probe 4. If you use a probe that is even just a little too large it will not go all the way in on males. With baby Rainbow Boas you need to use a probe that is small enough in diameter that it could cause injury if you are not VERY careful. Have you tried the palpation method? It is MUCH safer and some people are able to sex baby BRBs accurately using that method rather than probing. My sense of touch is just not sensitive enough to palpate babies but I use palpation when sexing any that are more than 30 inches long.

How does the palpation method work? I now how to "pop" baby snakes but I've never learned how to probe and I don't know anyone in the area who does so even after reading about it I don't want to try it on my own...

Thanks, I figure I have a trio of females but I'm going to try palpation and also a smaller probe. I have raised these 3 from babies acquired in a trade and never really did much with them but feed and clean them. Now that they are of age I figure to try and breed them. When I put them together the other day they did not act like they were interested at all. They actually acted like a bunch of males.
