Feeding Box vs. Non Feeding Box

eddiemnoian Dec 08, 2009 06:44 PM

Hey guys I have a Pyro Kingsnake and have been feeding him in a box since I got him a year ago. Now it seems like he refuses to eat in a box, but eats right away in his cage. I heard that feeding in the cage can make them more aggressive and is recommended not to do. Any thoughts? Or is that just a myth.

I heard that if you feed your snakes on newspapers it will turn them into black and white snakes.....like the one pictured above.

The only thing that happens with the newspaper is the snakes get real smart and up to date on current affairs. Unless you use real old newspaper.

That's why I have them on the Enquirer, don't need any snakes smarter than me, lol!

When it comes breeding time, I simply tear out pages from a Hustler magazine and use it for sustrate flooring, this seems to work every time..LOL!

I used to feed in separate containers cause i heard the same things,,but as my collection grew it made feeding an all day thing,,,,now i feed in the enclosure and have had no problem. as long as you don't only open the enclosure for feeding,,but open to take the snake for handling. i only have to watch it with 2 when it comes feeding time,,my hypo brooks and white sided bull,,they will jump out,,but tame as can be after,,,,

Snakes can learn associations with food, but they also get quickly discouraged when instead of food you tap them with a snake hook. Feed response is dampened. So you can simply do that. But again, I've never seen a pyro be aggressive in that way. A hungry Cal king, yes, but not pyro.

I had a boa that would wait looking at the cage door for food. Just waiting until that door started to open. All I had to do was put in a snake hook and gently touch the snake with it on the neck. After that, I could reach in and change the water, etc. Or put in food.

I've tried it once with a retic that was really cranky...didn't help so I quit doing it after a month or three. IT always seemed like more stress for both the snake and me. Moving them around right before and after eating and all...and with Shiva, me bleeding...
Some of my getula and one of my housies always seem to think food's coming when they see anything...but I just think that's them
