First Ball! - Mice or Rats?

engagechad Dec 09, 2009 09:11 AM

Hey all I just got my first Ball. I've done a lot of research and am a herp nerd anyway (I have 3 turts too) so I take it very seriously and would love to eventually get into breeding.

She is a het pied so thats the morph I'd like to eventually get into. Of course I'd like to get into others too like lucy's and spinners but I thought this would be a good start.

I've had her (I think it's a she) for 3 days and she already ate last night which is a relief!

I have one question that I haven't been able to find an answer for:

What is the nutritional difference between rats and mice?

Mice are cheaper so naturally one would think that rats are of higher quality or something but I need to hear why I should feed my snake rats instead of mice.

please let me know!

There isn't a whole lot of nutritional difference by weight between rats and mice. However mice won't be enough for a ball python in a very short period. Rats are better because even if they are more expensive individually, when your ball gets bigger and is eating 2-4 adult mice per meal, when one medium sized rat will be enough, the cost difference favors the rat.
