Bill on hold...

Barry Miller Dec 10, 2009 12:03 PM

It looks like the bill won't be going to the floor. They are aware that there are problems, putting a hold on it. We need to get the boa constrictors off of there! I hate to say it, but it is time to distance ourselves from the big pythons.

I disagree 100%, divide and conquer, oldest game in town...

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.

The behavior these unethical politicians and their cohorts are exibiting has to be fought by all of us, together. If we were to successfully seperate boas from pythons, do you really think that will last? They will be back, and after boas, then they will come back for colubrids. And while they are at it, they will be after the bird keepers, and small mammal keepers, and...and...and...

What we shold be thinking is how to get ALL pet owners engaged, not how to slip ourselves under the radar.

I don't have pythons, but I was just as angry when it was only the Burms being attacked as I am today. Getting boas off the list and sacraficing the rest would be no victory, it'd be playing into their hands. Then when they come for the boas, there wil be no python keepers to lend us a hand. Everyone, herpers or otherwise, should be jumping on the bandwagon, not some of us trying to find a way to safely jump off!

Just me $.02

LarM Dec 10, 2009 01:24 PM

They won't take your boas away if this passes

You won't be able to go out of state and buy more
(Have them shipped to you from out of state)

No way. Solidarity is what we need most. Andrew

Why even think that we should be divided from other reptile keepers, particuarly in this critical fight? We should ALL work together and be united regardless of what we keep or don't keep. This will ultimately affect all of us at some point.

United we stand, divided we fall...

This is just one battle in the war being fought against the progressive socialists and their ever expanding federal government. What should be a state issue is now going to be an oppressive federal law against our hobby/industry. Our kids will inherit a very different America than the ones we grew up in.

keep the change, I'll keep my freedom!!

Don't forget when it comes time to vote!!

Strength in numbers is always best. We do need to be careful of who we sell our animals. I know this is very difficult to do, but it is the irresponsible python owner that gets us all in hot water. We cant have the bad pub from the burms and retics because the owner put 2 bricks on the top , and cant understand how their 10ft snake pushed the lid off and got out. Im open to suggestions on how to really limit this from happening. Thanks

I would regulate,every lg constrictor owner must have a lic thru fish and game and have an inspection and a fee of $100 a year and there should be a 2 year apprentice program and must have a sponsor.just like they regulate falconry.I'm also in favor of micro chipping animals just to satisfy them even more.
I'm as tried as the next person with all this crap..we all know a snake will not live once winter or freezing conditions are upon them.
The usfish&game could make $$ from this and get off their butts and earn a buck rather the mentality of a caltrans 6 men to fix a pot hole....come on... way to much of this in our country.
Its a joke.

I was talking to a zoo director who is trying to help our cause. While we were talking (at about noon) he received a message from a congressional aide. He played me the message and the guy said that they were aware of problems, and that it was a on hold and wouldn't go to the floor. I'm just going on this, hopefully the aide's information is right.

I just heard a full report on National Public Radio-the bill has been passed out of committee including the amendment adding the "9" species-including Boa constrictor. Ity is expected to be quickly reconciled with a similar House bill and go up for a vote.

Of course if it goes to a vote it is almost certain to pass. It's a new world, folks....

Sorry-the above may be misleading. Actually what I believe will happen is that both bills will be passed in house and senate, then go to reconsiliation committee where any differences are ironed out, and finally on to the president for signature.....
