foam insulation

mike1011 Dec 10, 2009 02:19 PM

Hello everyone, was wondering if you guys can help me out. I am building a new heated tort shed that is 4' by 4', it will be framed out with 2by4's and will have 1/2 plywood sheathing on the outside, inside will have 1 by 6 up against the 2 by 4's so the torts cant destroy the insulation. My ques. is, my last shed I used the condensed foam board with the foil on one side and the other side is blue, I noticed now that they also have a white styrofoam board with one side foiled, is this as good as the condensed board or not good at all? (its alot cheaper) I use this foil face material to help keep the humidity in also. Also the last shed I didnt put an air gap in with the board, Am I losing enough insulation value like this to worry about or should I use the air gap(harder for me to build this way) Thanks for any input!

The Dow blue board,super tuff R, from the home depot has the highest R value per thickness.This is what your after,for keeping heat in ,and cold out.

You really dont need the air gap,just go to a little thicker on the blue board, higher R value.
I believe it comes from 1/2" thick to 2" thick.

That is a false statement;

Dow Chemical's Blue Board has an R value of 5 per inch however Owen Corning's Formular 150 and 250 "Pink board" also offer an R value of 5 per inch.

Both are an Extruded Polystyrene product.

Expanded products offer an R rating at 4.25 per inch.

Hi, thanks for the info, I am going to go with the blue board again. It worked well in the last shed, I was just considering that white foam board out of cheapness. Again thanks for the input!
