All the news orgs are saying it's limited to the 9 giants-including the boa constrictor-it follows the recent USGS report...

I hope so. To be honest I haven't followed up any more than this while I digest the meaning of his last SENTENCE in the summary of the news statement....

No, it says right in your link that the bill would ban 9 snakes.
"Nelson’s bill would make it illegal for people to import or engage in the interstate trade of nine dangerous snakes, including Burmese pythons, anacondas and the boa constrictor."

That certainly is bad news. I'm still faxing and calling senators every day so I haven't completely given up hope yet. It's just so frustrating how they're basing this on fear and hysteria instead of science. I think it's sad that a 2 year old died in Florida after being attacked by a snake. But I don't blame dogs when they attack people I blame the owner of the dog who more often than not has been negligent.
I also can't believe that they're calling for an all out ban. For snakes that *might* be able to survive in the wild, which from everything I've read the only place this has happened is in the everglades, why require a person to apply for a permit to own large snakes?
I was planning on starting a small breeding program next spring and maybe eventually opening a small reptile store. If this bill passes they've killed my small business before it even got started!
The wording and the news we get from this bill aren't very clear. in some places 45 species are mentioned (that would certainly include the Ball Pythons) and in others there is a mention of 9 "dangerous snakes" which are these dangerous snakes? Burmese, Reticulated, African Rock, Green Anaconda, Yellow Anaconda, and the Boa Constrictor? those are only 6...
Florida already has a law that requires a license and a microchip for Burmese, Reticulated, African Rock and the Anacondas...This new bill is unnecessary
So now it goes to the floor for a full vote, and then it has to be reconciled with the House bill proposed (has it passed yet?) by Kendrik Meek...There seems to be still some time then.
Isn't it Senate procedure that when a bill proposal is brought to the floor for all the Senators to vote, ANY senator can bring up an amendment to the bill? If that is so (i believe it is), then we have to call, fax, text, email (anything) all the Senators, regardless if they are from Alaska or from Florida

That last line is the most damning of them all
"Meantime, Nelson is working on a new bill to streamline the process for identifying and blocking other harmful invasive species."
So much for the USFW and their 4 year study based on facts and science - guess then new process will depend on which special interests throw the most money and bs behind it.

The real sad thing about this is that this is the only bill that Senator Nelson has passed...

This is so disturbing that politicians and special interest groups have so much power in deciding what we can and cannot keep as a pet or part of a genuine business. What scares me even more is the talk of black market interstate sales of snakes if and when this becomes a reality. This is just handing the politicians even more ammo to go ahead and just eradicate snake ownership as a whole. Please, please lets continue to fight for our rights to own and breed pythons and boas, not talk about the possibility of breaking the law and getting more beloved snakes banned!

Don't like the talk about breaking the law if need be...right after you clearly notice that THEY CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT. Doesn't matter what we do, or how "nice" we try to be. If they wanna take away rights...our rights, or ANY rights...they WILL. As a matter of fact, "rights" are just an illusion. Not much of a right if all it takes for you to lose it is one fossilized idiot with a pen, and a whole group of other idiots standing "right" behind him.
I almost wonder if he is actually working on anything else or if he just wrote that to make himself seem like some champion of conservationism when in fact he really is just a fear mongering media whore. Hopefully this clown won't be re-elected.
He wants to come up as a champion of the environment, u r right...he knows that by playing on peoples's uneducated fears and bringing up the unfortunate death of the 2-year old girl he can get a lot of supporters. Besides, it pays to show "concern" for the environment and the native animals.

Its not the end, but its just the start. Many crazy things come out of the senate including harry reed. The bill still needs to be voted in by the senate, then passed off to congress, and then to the prez. Dont let up now, the real fight has just started.
During a Senate vote any Senator can bring up amendments to a bill, and the it has to be voted and approved by the whole Senate and then reconciled with the House version and THEN signed by the President.
Let's act now and not let this happen. There seems to be still some time to modify this bill. I certainly hope so!

It feels as though I no longer live in the "America" that we were all raised to believe in.
Shameful.
Welcome to Obamas "change"
We're sitting here kicking/screaming/fighting for our hobbies/businesses/livelyhoods, our country's at war and our Prez is in friggin' Norway accepting the Nobel Peace Prize??????
Nice observation.
why hasn't anyone organized a march on washington? if we all did that, maybe these idiots would get the point.
Thanks Mr. C for posting this!

Nelson’s web site declares victory in moving the bill forward. The last paragraph reads as follows:
“On the House side, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek has filed a bill similar to Nelson’s. Meantime, Nelson is working on a new bill to streamline the process for identifying and blocking other harmful invasive species.”
Nelson, no doubt at the behest of HSUS, along with the full knowledge and cooperation of the USFWS and completely willing co-conspirators at the USGS are all looking forward to a new bill that will likely grant authority for these people who are in the pockets of the animal rights whackos to circumvent not only the legal process in place within the USFWS, which they refused to follow, but to avoid this annoying fight they have had going through the Senate and the House.
If we loose this one, EVERYTHING else will be in their sites next. They will be able to build upon this foundation and a weakened enemy is more vulnerable.

The only true way to combat this is to vote them out of office. I don't want to sound like a republican schill but it is what it is.
To believe that is to give up this battle. We are going to win this battle and we can't wait for the next election. Beat the drum.
Voting them out is imperative mind you, but fight now too!

I stand corrected.
Perhaps we can start a movement to recall Senator Nelson from office?

We can drop all of our large Constrictors at Nelson's office. He doesn't want us to have them , than let him have them all. I have two specially nice females that would love to make his acquaintance....
GARRIGA....I smiled when I read that, but wouldn't it be easier to just get a ton of "hots" and let them go in front of nelsons office?...lol...I feel that would be more effective. Death by GABOON!!! That $h!t would hurt even if it wasn't venomous..lol
Didn't want to stoop to they're level... I've often wonder who are the bigger snakes, the constrictors they are trying to remove or themselves. Come to think of it, Cobras are some of the largest snakes and deffinately larger than Boas, perhaps we should beat them to the punch and leave a few of them as well. Never know when a study will show it's ugly head confirming the likely hood of Cobras along with the large constrictors surviving the coldest of winters in Minnesota...
Makes me laugh how I can't get my Boas to have successful litters every year but according to the report they are running wild in the wild. Perhaps we should drop off our slugs so they can add them to their scientific data.
Spoken like a good Californian, Tosha! Not sure it's as easy elsewhere as we make that here. LOL. But it might not be a bad time to figure out where his opposition will come from when he stands for re-election -- a candidacy perhaps worth supporting. As far as that goes, not real thrilled with Boxer at the moment.
