As long as balls aren't on the bill....

Jeffrodgers Dec 10, 2009 06:51 PM

Ball python keepers are in the clear if this bill does pass?

Replies (17)

Oz Dec 10, 2009 06:57 PM

This bill is flawed on so many levels. If we stand by and let this pass it will not be long before they come after balls. This bill is unjust any we have to fight it. Period...

This is absolutely the truth, just because they don't have yours listed now does not mean they won't be soon. Fight this and all legislation that tries to take away our rights to work with reptiles!

Yeah but are ball pythons running wild in the everglades? Has their ever been a known death from a ball python attack? If the Burmese Pythons is in the everglades why don't they just ban them?

What about blood pythons, are they in jeopardy?

Bolitochrome Dec 10, 2009 07:33 PM

I don't think there is a human death attributed to all 9 species on the bill. I know not all 9 species are found in the wild, whether in Florida or not. The only thing that all 9 of these species had in common that puts them in this bill is that they are BIG.

How many people have been killed by ball pythons? the same number of people that have been killed by boa constrictors, but that didn't stop the ignorant politicians who get promised money from special interest groups. This is how they work-divide and conquer.

How exactly will banning burms wipe them out in the everglades? They're not going to magically vanish if someone bans them. When you say crap like that, it just gives fuel to the people who say there are 130,000 of them in florida running rampant and wiping out native species. Earlier this year I spent a week and a half in Florida-part of the reason I went was to see all of these invasives-I saw collared doves, mynahs, walking catfish, feral hogs, several species of house gecko, a yacare caiman, green iguanas, spiny tailed iguanas, jungle fowl, monk parrots, conures, cuban tree frogs, and plenty of feral cats, but not a single burm. Yes, they are there, but not in the numbers the media reports-and how many people have you heard of being killed by an everglades burm?

Yeah, the smaller species are safe for now, but do you think the HSUS is going to stop here? Not a chance.

Quite honestly yes there is a documented death in which a ball python was the cause. It occurred in Milwaukee. A woman stepped out on her front porch in the summer and there was a stray ball python. She died from a heart attack. The snake was listed as the cause of the heart attack.

I know this because I got the snake in my rescue.

Dividing with the mentality that mine isnt affected doesnt work. This is driven to make everything wrong. Remember HR669 was EVERYTHING. Until this morning S373 WAS EVERYTHING.

For now probably, but they will not stop here. Another bill will be just around the corner at the whim of whichever special interest group decides to buy a politician.

If this passes Nelson will use this success to go after other snakes. With the big snake and potentially the motivation, money and effort of those people pushed aside, the fight to take Ball Pythons and other snakes down will be an easier task.

HSUS and all their willing accomplices that have brought us to this point in this deception, will be coming to take your Balls next.

If we divide as Ball Python breeders and let them take away part of our hobby then we have no right to be in the hobby. We have to stand up for our fellow big snake keepers and fight like it is our animals being taken away. It's sad that any reptile lover would even think that it is okay as long as it's not our animals on that list. Remember next time when it is your animal and you didn't fight for them they will not be there for you. We need to be unitied! Brian(BHB)

bombballz Dec 10, 2009 07:31 PM

Well said!!!

Ben_Renick Dec 10, 2009 07:43 PM

Brians post hit the nail on the head. Once the government takes the large 9, they will move on to smaller species, and eventually Ball Pythons (which were on the list to start with).

I will not stand by and allow my government to strip me of my rights as an American citizen.

We need to unite and fight for our rights as animal lovers.

I've been telling people this for years. Maybe people will listen now that you're saying it, Brian. If we don't stand up for other snake keepers, they're sure as hell not going to be there for us when the time comes. It's just basic common sense.

Post like yours make me so mad.I keep Western Hognose and a few Corn snakes. When ever i see a new post about our rights to keep reptiles i call the #s and i write a letter. We as reptile keepers all need to stand together no matter what.Either stand up or get the hell out.
My two cents.

Thank you, Jodi. I don't keep any of the species listed on this bill, but I'd be a fool to think that they are going to stop here. If we're not all in this together, it's as good as over for everyone.

Because of people in this hobby that feel like they don't need to do anything because they don't keep an animal that is on the list.

A majority of my reptile collection is boas and this bill piss's me off more than anything. But when the only animal on the list was the python genesis I was writing letters, making phone calls and trying to light fires under peoples butts just as if I only kept ball pythons or another type of python.

We as a REPTILE COMMUNITY need to fight TOGETHER. That means the people that keep corns, milks, kings, retics, monitors, leopard geckos, crested geckos, I could go on and on and on for days but I think you get the point. It's not just the responsibility of the people who have animals on the list to fight this fight alone, IT'S THE WHOLE REPTILE COMMUNITIES FIGHT.

It makes me sick to think that the people keeping lizards or smaller snakes are just sitting back doing nothing because they think they are in the clear. What makes you people think that the boa, burm, and other 7 animals on the list people will be around to help you fight your fight when you need them.

Sorry for the long winded post, I just needed to rant.

Regards,
Greg Bennett

Now I don't post often. But I would just like to say I own FAR more boas than I do ball pythons. I do not own a burm however. Does that mean that if boa's weren't included on this bill that I would just sit here and watch?

No. Because if we allow this to pass it will just open the door for them to add any other reptile they want based on insane imaginations that they pass as facts.

Think about it. If this bill passes how hard you think it will be for them to add just one more non-native constrictor to the list? Then you will be wishing that, even though you only own ball pythons, you had done something at the start.
