Obama could be key

jsschrei Dec 10, 2009 07:53 PM

Even if the bill passes the Senate and the House, Obama has to sign it. If he vetoes the Senate and House need 2/3 vote to overule his veto. 2/3 can be very hard to get.

Please send your letters to President Obama. Make them personal. Give examples of why interstate sale and trade are important to you as a member of the hobby/industry!

I'm sending mine. Several times. To him and to every Senator and House member (I posted my letter a few below this one).

Obama came into presidency during economic crisis. There have already been a few posts regarding his interest in hearing about matters that affect us financially. Make the difference!

I completely agree with you on that one. I hope we can stop this long before it makes it onto his desk however.

I would hop long before too, but the sooner he is advised about letters pouring in over this tragedy, the more informed decision he may make.

if your putting your hopes on Obama, were in trouble. The man oozes socialism. He could care less about us "freaks" with snakes. Trust me, any of them who are for this bill , in closed rooms laugh at us.
I sent bill nelson a letter on how i really feel about him and the rest of the elite ruling class.
I hope it dont pass.. I did what I can, lets see what happens.

That is one hell of an assumption Mike.

Assumptions get won't get you anywhere in this fight. You have to take politics out of this even though it is highly political in some regards. The best way to go is to have a good defense and stance on this issue; not name calling and political beliefs.

It's best if you can argue your way out of a wet paper bag then to throw such rhetoric around, regardless of your personal political beliefs.

I wanted to add this:

Being upset at the Majority is not going to help this situation. I know that 2/3 of the people serving on the committee were democrat, however, coming at this with anger is not going to help us.

Like I said before we have to establish the facts and go with that. There is no need for anger other than the anger that we all share for the threat to our hobby.

jsschrei Dec 10, 2009 08:52 PM

Regardless of your views of the current party in charge, as a citizen of the United States you have to stand up for what you want.

Many of the countries in this world don't have that luxury. We should embrace it.

I agree, but the facts are the facts. We, the breeders and keepers, are the only ones who care about this. You ask anyone on either side of the political isle, about keeping snakes most folks would cringe and say we should have them without much consideration.
Heck I even had my mom and others who cant stand snakes make thier voice heard, just because they dont feel the goverment should regulate and dictate another part of our lives.
My post was right on.
Not political, just seeing things for the way the are.
I dont really waste time on political arguments.
I dont subscribe to the politicly correct crowd.
I have earned and paid my own way through life and and dont need more govermental control placed on me.
They are taking more and more freedoms from us all the time.
Thats a whole differant subject.
Peace .

I agree with you Mike, but we should be worried about the few steps ahead instead of what might happen if this ends up on Obama's desk.

We all feel the same hurt and anger at this point, but I'm sure we all still have hope. I'm not willing to have that hope shot down, not just yet.

We should be angry at all on that committee, we should be angered by those in our industry who didn't take the time to put some effort into this, but we should take a change in direction to the new fight; reconciling political differences, standing up as one group fighting for the same cause, and putting facts beyond politics and fighting for the truth of the matter. Not saying that you aren't, that is just a message for everyone for our continuing FIGHT!

I agree... we will fight it, regardless of outcome and if not the outcome we want..fight it some more.

I know alot of people dislike and some even hate him, but I think it couldn't hurt to try and get Rush Limbaugh to report on this. Seeing how it is a Democrat sponsored bill and will cost thousands of jobs it could be another sound bite for him to take a bite out of. If enough people email him requesting him to have someone from Usark.org and/or PIJAC.org on to share our side it couldn't hurt.

I understand where you are going with this, but if Rush Limbaugh gets behind this bill with us it could mean great support on one side but could be detrimental on the other.

Since we are dealing with democratic majority, having his name on this may not be the best avenue, especially if it ends up on Obama's desk.

I am working to get some publicity on a local news station here in Raleigh. I am hoping that this comes through and that local NC herpers like Andrew Wyatt, Mack Robinette, Adam Perry and Dr. Booth can speak up about this issue.

in my opinion, is putting the kind of political pressure on these politicians that they understand. LOCALLY, things like a full page ads in Florida's various newspapers attacking Senator Nelsons character and alerting the public that he is more concerned about nonsense then what the real problems in America are. Things like because of Senators Nelson actions, THOUSANDS will loose their jobs. Things like because of Senator Nelsons actions, there will be millions of so called illegal snakes and the real reason the bill was started in the first place WAS NEVER EVEN ADDRESSED. And who's going to enforce such a law?US Fish and Game? Once we get that ball rolling, trust me....the other dopes in the Senate will want nothing to do with this issue. That is pressure these people understand. THE FEAR OF LOSING THEIR SEAT(AKA POWER). Also, USARK should be using donations to hire a PR firm. Respectfully, It can't get done from Arizona. This fight needs to based out of Florida and thats where most of the pressure should be. These are areas where USARK donations should be spent. Mike Panichi

LarM Dec 11, 2009 03:13 PM

Mike you hit it right on the head. With media attention that shows this issue to be a negative and bad for Americans.

Politicians will run the other way

distance themselves from it and vote it down

Now to implement these ideas

Tie Nelson to the HSUS anti-pet agenda and watch him fry. Hunters, farmers and other pet industries HATE the HSUS. Time to reach out and unite. I hunt and I've been sharing the HSUS's latest antics over our Python Ban with them. All agree that the HSUS must be exposed for who they are and how they operate. We have to let the public know that if they are successful with our pets, their pets will be next!! Our their hunting rights, or their ability to farm, or even eat a nice T-bone steak.

If someone thinks you are exaggerating then point out that the danger is real because powerful people in our government are sympathetic to the radical HSUS agenda. For example, take a look at Obama's U.S. Regulatory Czar, Cass Sunstein:

KevMadden Dec 10, 2009 10:43 PM

Jessica - Obama is going to sign anything that give the federal government more power. The key is moderate democrats.

BrandonSander Dec 10, 2009 11:46 PM

Like others pointed out above - don't make assumptions. It's completely non-productive. In fact, assuming what he will or won't do or even the effectiveness of writing to the president (or performing any other action to protest this bill) is COMPLETELY COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE.

By making an assumption that he won't read the letters, that he won't care about them or that he will vote for the bill will only cause others to NOT write those letters.

He may not care about snakes or like reptiles in general and one or two letters may not make much of a difference in his opinion. However, (and this part is to anyone thinking about writing or contacting the president) the more letters that we send, the better our chances will be in influencing him.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with writing to him now. Even if the bill takes months to reach his desk (perhaps if we are really blessed it won't even get that far) looking ahead at future (possible) outcomes and taking preemptive action is a GREAT idea. Being prepared can only help our cause.

To everyone out there who has an idea of how they can help - do it! There will always be people who will say that an idea isn't big enough to work but everything that can be done to protest this bill will help. The small actions will still be small but their cumulative affect can be VERY BIG! Many of us made calls or wrote letters and those by themselves are small actions, but the fact that so many of us did it made an impact. At this time it hasn't made enough of an impact, but keep it going.

Think outside of the box - someone mentioned contacting the aids that are responsible for researching this bill for the various senators - that is an AWESOME idea. Those aids aren't just researching the science behind this bill but they will be key in influencing the senator's decisions regarding supporting this bill. If we can gather the names, numbers, addresses, and email addresses of these aids we can let them know our position.

Obviously, the secretaries are getting tired of us (there have been plenty of reports of them hanging up or being rude to callers). These aids need to know not only our position against this bill, but also our feelings about supporting an unscientifically based bill. Ultimately, what they need to know and hear from us is that even if this bill doesn't pass, the simple act of voting for it will mean we a loss of our votes and money. If we all start getting a hold of these aids that message WILL get passed on, I can guarantee it.
