"False Goini found near Jacksonville FL."

BlueKing Sep 18, 2003 06:58 PM

I was cruising down the road in Duval County yesterday and found an interesting (Fresh DOR) snake. I stopped to see what it was. I noticed a nice wide-red banded black snake about 14" long. I though what a nice looking "red phase goini", until I got out of the car and took a closer look. It turned out to be an Eastern Coral snake that had no yellow bands on its body. The only yellow I found was on the snout and near the tip of the tail. Has anyone ever seen one like this?
I guess the trend is reversing. The Coral snake wants to be a King snake! LOL! ! !
So before you pick up A baby goini you may want to look twice, it may be an Eatern Coral/goini mimick! LOL!

Sorry, but I did not have a camera with me. I was returning from a long trip and really wasn't doing any serious herping at the time, but I couldn't help but notice the pretty colors on the snake as I drove by. I turned around to see what it was and was surprised to see this unusual specimen. I've seen and caught many coral snakes in the past and never seen one like that before. I do wish I had my camera with me! ! !

Good luck! Let me know if you find anything! I went there for about three days earlier this month; Had no luck finding goinis, but I did find a nice 20 inch female Scarlet King (under a small pile of boards-Wakulla County locale). Other than that I saw several black racers and two eastern garter snakes and one DOR Gopher tortoise. I also came upon a female slider laying eggs in an open sandy area (kinda late for that isn't it ?)

Well, take care and good luck!
