Brumation interupted

BobLabla Dec 11, 2009 04:53 PM

I have begun brumating my lizards a few weeks ago with no problems. I have recently gotten alot of interst in people wanting to purchase my dragons. Is it an unhealthy shock to thier system to have thier brumation interupted? Whats the best way going about this. If i wake them up can i continue brumation again in a few weeks?

I'm not sure what you are asking. Brumation is really a natural process that some dragons go through. About 1/3 of my dragons brumate. When they feel the time is right they dig into a hide on the cool side and go to sleep. They generally sleep for 4 to 5 months. I wake them every 6 weeks to check on them. At that time I offer water from a dropper. They always partake. Generally they warm up and then stay out for a few hours and then go back. I could not get them to stay awake for a few weeks even if I wanted to. There is a picture below of 3 brumating dragons.

I feel you are talking about "cooling" which is what breeders do to encourage egg production in females. Cooling is taking an active dragon and putting it in a cool dark place so that the dragon has no choice but to sleep. It doesn't sound like a good idea to cool a dragon for a few weeks then stop and start again. This would be very unnatural. But I am not a breeder and have never cooled a dragon. There are breeders here that can give a better opinion if this is what you are talking about.

I live where the season change causes some of my adults to go into brumation,I have purposely brought them out of brumation at times, but only after at least 2 months....usually 3.I don't know how it would affect them to be awakened and then shipped soon after....it may be a bit much but I've never done it so I can't say.The healthier your dragons are,the better they will handle any temp.change,stress,etc.Dragons are very hardy when they are healthy and of good weight, but you will have to decide if you would want to ship right after awakening them.
