QUESTION about Mangrove Monitors

jimjum12 Dec 12, 2009 05:39 AM

I have 2 Mangrove Monitors. I have read that a serious overhaul of the Mangrove species is in order and agree. My 2 are not of the typically available yellow spotted variety, but rather an aqua green spotted variety...almost turqouise. It actually took a couple of years searching to find the female (thank you, Black Forest Reptiles)and was wondering if anyone has any information regarding these differences...for example locality of origin. They have coupled several times in the last few weeks and it wasn't at all the vicious affair that I had been led to expect. The male even allows "Tiki" full use of his favorite basking spot when she is "visiting" his enclosure. In the event that they may have had a successful mating are there any tips on when and how I might expect signs of her being gravid ? Any information would be appreciated. GOD BLESS...

P.S. They are primarily pets and breeding is not my main concern, but I don't want her to become egg bound.

Great looking beast BTW, it's rarely ever you see such a big animal. I've seen Jesus' friend several times in photos over the past couple years. I see pics of the big male, do you have any photos of adult female mangrove monitor? They are reported to be much smaller then boys, just wanted to see how much smaller.

Okay,I have a link here from other active monitor forum. It isn't too old of a post and mentions a lot information that you're looking for. Agian, the 'name to a face'game isn't 100% all the time since many reports of location come from pouchers.
I hope many of the photos can help.

Check your Messages, if i posted it here...it would be deleted.

Here's a couple of Tiki and I'll try to upload a couple more soon. In the first pic, she's underneath Twilight. In the second she is about 2 1/2 years old and 30 inches. She's grown another 10 inches since then. GOD BLESS...

By the photos, your animals seem to be getting along. Thanks for sharing and answering my question.

May I ask if you provide a nesting box just incase you do get something out them breeding? With many monitor species, it takes about 30 days or so for a female lay after succesfuly breeding.

Hello Jimjum,
For starters, BIG applause on raising up those beautiful mangroves! Mangroves are wonderful lizards that I am surprised are not more frequently enjoyed... If you can put a nice deep substrate in their/her cage(maybe some of those good leaves I can see in the background of your photos) about 2 feet deep and dampen them down, than she should do the rest... A useable substrate in the cage offers additional humidity, shelter, and nesting medium. Best to you- Mike S

Thanks to you and sulpherboy for the quick response. I'll try the leaves over the dirt she already has. I've lost 2 female iguanas due to being egg bound and it's a traumatic experience...especially for the lizard. GOD BLESS...
