A different Chicken question

BryanR. Sep 18, 2003 07:15 PM

Okay lots of questions about feeding dragons chicken have been asked in the past. Is it okay, if my drag will eat like raw chicken to replace chicken with crickets, since its cheaper, since cricekts dont have that much meat on them. It might take some effort to get him to eat it, but if he does, will chicken, the occasional veggies and the once a week fuzzie/hopper be a decent diet? Crickets really get expensive, I spend 10 dollars a week on food right now, and its getting really hard for me to do.

Cant mice and baby chicks that people feed their reptiles also carry it? So really whats the difference?

sure they do, and so do your lizards. They dont carry dangerous ammouts. Id suggest cooking them, or nuking them in the microwave for a couple seconds tehn lettin it cool off.

Or maybe boil it? Or something, but I'll probally just use it to replace the mice, maybe give him some twice a week. And crickets every other day, the rest of the week, and veggies whenever he chooses to eat them.

Samonella is more of a threat with comercial chicken because it is raise and processed in less sanitary conditions then the average feeder mouse, sad but true! Also, as a staple diet its to rich in fat and protien. you will have to suppliment with high doses of calcium or you may end up with MBD. If your looking for a cheaper alternative to purchasing crickets, why don't you just raise your own food? Mice or superworms are good alternatives and are easy to raise.

Um no!
Think of it this way, what goes into your cricket goes into your reptile. Chicken works on some basis but why would u restrict only feeding it that. Wild drags eat about 20 different things a day. I own 4 W drags and they cost me a lot too, but dont be that cheap. Buy 50 criks a week. maybe 5 might die on you. Give them a lot of water and plenty of veggies/fish food/dog food/ and calcium supplement on the crickets food. If feeding your crickets well, you wont need to fill up your drag so much, so u can reduce the ammount you feed him daily. For my drags, i buy 100 cricks a week and 30 kingworms, as well as throwing in 4 hoppers.
It costs more to replace your reptile bulbs than it should to buy food for those guys.
