Snakes in the Garage?

Tempo Dec 14, 2009 12:57 PM

I currently house my reptiles in my room. I already have a huge ferret cage in here and a large tank for my blue tongue skink.

I wish to expand my collection, however I have no room to do so in the house. I thought about setting something up in the garage, since mine is quite big. However my car goes in the garage!

I'm not going to put animals in the garage if I don't know how they would cope with the car (movement in/out, fumes, etc).

Does anyone house their animals in the garage? Is it safe for the animals?

Limited fumes are OK - i.e. driving in/out of the garage. No idling in there though for extended time.

Also, high temps in Summer can be an issue.

That is where a lot of ours are. We tore out the old sheet rock, put up insulation and new sheet rock on the walls and the same for the ceiling. We installed a window unit a/c and modified our gas central heat and air to heat the garage as well. We sealed the concrete floor with drylock to keep moisture down. We also used cheap peel and stick tiles to make it look less like a garage.

We sealed up any gaps around the garage door, which is still functional but locked. It comes in handy during the spring and summer months. I can open the door and clean rat and snake cages and the water hose is around the corner and trashcan is at the curb. During the winter, we have to carry bags of dirty bedding and papers through the house the long way around.

I love having them in the garage. Much more escape-"friendly" than the house, no kids, no dogs, no cats can get out there and torment the animals....

If done properly, yes you can keep them in the garage. I run a humidifier and with the window unit running, keeps the room temp about 80 degrees, or if I know I'll be cleaning cages for a few hours, I'll turn the a/c up and cool the room off a bit.

It also depends on where you live. I personally live in wisconsin and keep my rats in the garage (my wife is soo glad that we don't have them in the house anymore) however I do not use my garage for my car and they are in the upstairs of my garage.

Biggest thing I would be concerned about is temps and air flow. Also if you live somewhere cold like I do you need to really make sure your garage is well isolated because it is really hard on your heaters and wallet when you have a lot of draft spots.
