Opinions on BCC's please!!!

tevie84 Dec 14, 2009 03:37 PM

If anyone can help steer me in the right way i would appreciate it and a little biased opinions are welcome. I have mainly balls and a couple of Colombians but something about BCC's is catching my eye. The main reason I didnt want one before was mainly size but I think I am ready for a bigger sized boa. What I need help with is which kind of BCC should I go with? I am leaning towards Guyanas because of the shades of purple but Suri's are nice as well. Brazilians have nice shades of grey and pattern and Peruvians also have nice pink and purple shades as well. If I can get opinions and pictures of why I should choose a certain locale of BCC i would appreciate it. Thanks!!!

BCC's are in my opinion the most rewarding species I've ever kept.... Best advice buy from a good source of captive bred babies... Each locale has it's own look and size... so it really comes down to personal preference... they all have similer requirements as far as husbandry is concerned....

If you're interested in smaller BCC's I would suggest a Brazilian.... They tend to stay smaller than Surinames and Peruvians ... you can expect adult females to get around 5-6 feet ....Where Surinames can get to 8 feet or more.....

Go to Reptile insider or Kingsnake.com.... you can usually find some really nice captive bred stuff.... or IM me... and Ill send you some links to people that I trust

Wow thats interesting. I didnt know Brazilians stay smaller. That weighs heavily now considering I am still looking at size but Guyanan's look really nice. I cant find any adult photos of Brazilians.

A few things to keep in mind.

Size is more a factor of genetics and feeding, than it is locality. Yes, Brazilians tend to stay smaller, but I've also seen 4' adult Guyanese BCC as well. I've also heard of larger Brazilians too - 8' or so. Then again, there are VERY RARE cases of 10-12' Guyanese BCC.

The recommendations you've received by other members is spot-on, buy from a reputable breeder to ensure you receive the best quality.

Adult size, color, and contrast are something you should be looking to the breeder to help you with. Be sure you ask for pictures of the parents to get a good idea of how your boa will turn out. You'll also want to see pictures of the animals siblings to see how it compares in terms of color and contrast at an early age. Realize that the more alike the parents and grandparents are in terms of size, color, contrast, and consistency of pattern, the more alike the babies will be as they mature into adults. The more disparate they parents and grandparents are, the more variability you'll see in the litter as they mature into adults.

Finally, if you purchase your boa as a baby from a breeder with small to average sized adults, your experience will grow along with your animal as it matures into a small to average sized adult itself. It takes 4-6 or 7 years for a BCC to reach it's adult size. That's plenty of time for your learning curve and comfort level to adjust.

What's written above is purely my opinion. In fact, MOST of what you read on the internet is someone's opinion. Don't take it too seriously
