Sen Nelson response to my complaint

dumje Dec 14, 2009 09:17 PM

I sent him a letter on his website...stating my personal case as well as the ramifications as others...I also mentioned that as a Democrat I will change my party affiliation if this was to pass...this was a little bit better of a respnse than the last time he responded...but not good enough!!!!

Thank you for writing me about S. 373, a bill I introduced that would ban the importation and trade between States of the Burmese python.

Burmese pythons often are released into the wild when their owners can no longer care for them. Though not native to south Florida, Burmese pythons are thriving in the Everglades National Park, threatening natural species, many of which are endangered, and posing the risk of upsetting the delicate ecosystem of the region. We have invested many years and billions of dollars in an effort to restore the Everglades to its natural balance, and non-native species, like Burmese pythons, threaten to undo that work.

During a committee review of S. 373, the bill was amended to cover nine constrictor species deemed high or medium risk by a recent U.S. Geological Service report.

As this legislation moves through Congress, I will keep your views in mind.

Sincerely,
Senator Bill Nelson

its just a form response, he likely never read what you sent and is telling you that even though it is a Florida problem it needs to be enacted nation wide even though that makes no sense. He semms like a heck of a guy.

I called the one day and talked to one of his people explaining how dumb the law was. His response I am no expert. I told him neither was the Senator. I have little faith in him. And will work to get him out of office come next election.

Why wait? Maybe it's time for a Senator Nelson recall. If nothing else, maybe it will get him to stop with his agenda for a moment and realize how much this legislation hurts people. If his constituency is willing to try to remove from office now, maybe he'll start listening to them rather than these special interest groups and their money.

do you really think there are enough reptile keepers in this area that would "show up" to actually cause him to even think about what he's doing. That is the problem that we are having. even though we are pasionate about what we do/keep, we don't show up consistantly and don't have the lobbying power to do anything about it. Think about it, HSUS consistantly gives millions of dollars to these politians to get the laws passed that they want and have their supporters fund national commercials, what do we have? We have no hollywood superstars talking about how important it is for us to be able to breed and sell these animals do we?

You are very right in your thinking. They (HSUS) always target the smaller groups or even break the groups up. Big cats/ small cats. Big snakes/small snakes hunters/trappers. We must not only fight this with the reptile community but bring in the other animal owners as well. If the animal owners, both exotic and domestic even partially unite it would be an impressive front.

"experts". Of varying degrees of course, but far more than these ignorant politicians that know NOTHING about the animals they're persecuting. Did you see the one from Oklahoma saying in the hearing last week that when the snakes get to OK, they won't be there long because his good ole' boy buddies would form a posse and get them out quickly?...US Government or The Blue Collar Comedy Tour? Sometimes I can't tell the difference.

I dont understand , being a retail reptile store in MIAMI, Fl, close to Everglades national park, how people are releasing them? I have had the store for over 3 years and previous owner for over 10, and burmese pythons were barely sold, as well as rarely turned in. Only Albino burmese were sold in quantity, and we dont see them running around the ENP.
Please show me scientific EVIDENCE by DNA analysis that the burmese pythons being captured are of several different bloodlines and not all probably close to 100% related.
If they are 100% related, then how are people dumping them?
I never ever hear of customers talking about releasing their snakes, and still don't. Most people bring them here to our shop or sell them on craigslist. The public perception is there snake wouldnt behappy and would probably die, no joke! We have always gladly accepted ANY snake dropped off,and in the 3 years I have been here, only 4 normal burmese were dropped off. 2 from a ZOO!!! and the other 2 were caught. None were from private individuals, as we havent sold a normal burmese EVER in the shop!
So PLEASE explain how the snakes are being thrown out in droves by people who no longer want them? Sen. Nelson, where is the evidence showing different bloodlines, new bloodlines being found, etc etc

They can't and that is the problem. However, those that are making the policy that will change our lives don't care about science. They only care about science fiction!!!!! You know, 40ft long snakes running rampant in New York city eating people and cars. The bad thing is that whenever I explain these laws to people they automatically react by saying well I don't keep snakes so it doesn't matter to me. However, once I explain to them that this will set precidence (sp) that they can ban pets that are proven to be harmful to the environment or potentially dangerous to the public (they say the snakes are not me) than they realize that the ultimate goal of the HSUS to ban all pet ownership is a possibility. I mean after all, if they are able to use fake science to pass the python bill, look at all the true science that show how dangerous the feral cat population is to the environment and the feral dog population is to the public. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE ALL PETS WILL BE DANGEROUS TO OWN AND WILL BE BANNED, THIS IS A FACT BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am still willing to bet that the burms that are out there are ones that got out of facilities damaged during major storms over the year and that there are a couple hundred out there, not a hundred thousand.

TOTALLY off topic, but I can't wait to see that male Pewter you're shipping for Mitchell today. Thanks man.

Socialism is evil. As a avid reptile owner, I don't vote for either party. I have never in my life voted for a democrat and anyone who does deserves what they get.
