Python Study In SC

bloo Dec 15, 2009 05:25 PM

Anyone know what's going on at the SREL burmese study?
Tomorrow's forecast is a high of 56F and a low of 30F.i
Right now it's about 43F. Doesn't look favorable for those pythons. Of course, a novice keeper can figure the outcome.

I was thinking about that today. Anyone have any results? Will we ever know if they all die?

Anyone want to take bets that the study animals are actually some of their pets and they recapture them and house them indoors until weather permitts? Or do you think that they are condufting a 100% legitimate study regardless of the outcome?

I'm just sayin.......

At this point, they're Burmsicles.

I doubt that. Whit Gibbons is a well-respected herpetologist - ever hear of the SREL? I've met him once at a diamonback terrapin working group. The man has at least one species named after him (Graptemys gibbonsi). I chat with people who have worked with him. He might not say the brightest things to the press, but I expect this to be a scientific study.

I wonder how the storm affected them? I'm pretty far east (south of Salisbury), and we only got 3-4"

Katrina Dec 20, 2009 10:35 AM

"3-4" That's IT? We're looking at 15" here.

I don't know much about snakes, but I've heard that the larger Burmese are prone to pneumonia, and I'd think even nights in the 50s would be condusive to developing pneumonia - and making a cold snake vulnerable to predation.

I'm near Sanford, NC and we recieved some furries and ice, but it was rain by 11pm. Nothing stuck, which is good because I hate being .
I'm curious as to wether they may have brought the animals inside, but this would void the study or end it right there. If ended, the conclusion would be that they simply cannot survive in that environment. I can't find any updates, but maybe someone knows somebody on the inside that could leak us some knowledge on this.

I, too, know Whit but when I hear about manmade dens, food put into enclosure etc from Dorkiss [dork] it sounds like made for media junk science to me and I'm very dissapointed in WHIT...

Science is not what it used to be. Now its based on the desired outcome not the actual facts.
