2 different temp guns alot different !

rustynail777 Dec 17, 2009 09:46 PM

I have a pro-exotics (pe1) and recently got a Ryobi(kind with laser pointer)
Problem is I dont know which to trust.
The pro exotics will read much hotter ,usually 10-15 degrees!
This is pointing at exact same spot and same distance.

i am inclined to believe the ryobi,as it just seems like it is better made ,and I know mechanics ect...use it.

but the difference is pretty big.......any thoughts on which I should trust?
Thanks

you need a control. point it at the bulb end of a thermometer and see which is closer to the reading on the thermometer... and there ya go

Tried that, they both read about the same. The problem occurs when its at a basking spot.Thats when the pro exotics reads alot higher.
But if I just point at a non basking spot they are the same or close.

What you are seeing is most likely a difference in the distance to spot ratio (D:S ratio).

On the PE-1, the D:S ratio is 1:1. At one inch away, you are reading a one inch spot. At 6 inches away, a 6 inch spot.

On our PE-2 unit, which also has a laser (the laser has no effect on the reading, regardless of brand), the D:S ratio is 6:1. That means at 6 inches away, you are reading a one inch spot.

So using both units to measure from 6 inches away, the PE-1 is giving you the average of a 6 inch area, while the PE-2 is reading just the center, a 1 inch area. Under a basking spot, that center inch may indeed be hotter than the surface 5 inches away.

Make sense? I am guessing the Ryobi unit has a different D:S ratio, and so you are measuring different actual areas.

I can assure you that our units, and the infrared sensors that they use, are as fine as any other on the market : )

There are other usability FAQs, like adjustable Emissivity, available on our website, for more info and detail. Or feel free to inquire directly.
