worked my first black mamba today

earthmover Sep 18, 2003 09:14 PM

man today was an intense day. the experience of the black mamba
(dendroaspis polylepis) was very suspensful. i worked the animal with two hooks and was very slow and patient with my movements and the 5ft snake really handled well. he is very fast unbeleivably fast. i also got to handle some greens toady as well as a king cobra. ive been doing this for five years now and i dont think im ready for them at home yet but it is part of my job now and i have av on hand as well as 3 other very experienced keepers there with me. i feel like today i elevated myself to a new level of handling skill as well as mental toughness.this is by no means a message for everyone and their mom to go buy a black mamba though dont take it that way

Congrats! Personally I am not a fan of keeping those at home...But we all have our preferences. All I would suggest is that you keep that SPEED in mind and then take a hard look at how much manuvering room and hard to reach places you have in your snakeroom. Again congrats and good luck!

Hey Ryan-

Way to go! They're letting you play with mambas now?

A black and a king in the same day? Congratulations! After it was over I bet you were buzzed bigtime.
