road trip?

fliptop Dec 20, 2009 05:06 PM

gotMilkers,

I'll be heading out of town at the end of this week, driving four hours southeast of where I live.

SHOULD I bring my pueblans with me? It's supposed to be in the 50s at night while I'm gone and in the upper 60s/low 70s where I'm headed.

I won't leave heat on while I'm outta town (too paranoid about a fire).

So, is it better to put the little ones through the stress of a four-hour drive each way, or leave them in the 50s? It'll be two weeks since their last meal by the time I leave, and I won't offer them food till I'm back.

Thanks!

Personally, I wouldn't sweat bringing them on the trip if you don't want to heat them at the house while you are gone. But you'd better make DARN SURE you don't get the sun shining directly in on them on the ride. I always put a fluffed-up white towel over snakes in transit so it reflects any possible sun rays. Your trip really wouldn't be any different than if you just bought them at a show, and were driving them back home. I would just make sure they have an empty stomach is all until you get back.

white styrofoam boxes......all you need for heated or cooled items........

heat packs...bottle of water...warm water...

cold pack...bottle of water...frozen....

....I'd leave them at home....

but I am always here..............

Personally I would leave the heat on and have a friend come by and check on them maybe the 5th and 10th day. It doesnt really have to be a "snake friend"(pretty plants with tongues!), there are alot fewer problems(albeit bigger ones)leaving them than taking them. Too many variables including losing them in the car, overheating, feeding, etc. You can even have them bold enough to drop a mouse in their last day.....PAY someone if you have to, write explicit directions, or better yet make a snake friend locally where you can leave them with someone and pick em up on the way back. It goes both ways, we all realize that life happens just dont 1)abuse the privalege and 2)lose someone else's snake! Pretty simple.

Make me feel like a loser, huh? No, I don't got no friends. j/k but the ones I have locally wouldn't look after them. I'm also kinda new to the area--that's why I don't have friends. Really. I'm NOT a loser!

Trusting people and making friends is a lost art for some on the forum. I dont know where you are from or where you are living but it would be beneficial to have people around you can trust. Others would be surprised how easy snakes are to care for, building this trust can lead to other future keepers too. I know in the Boston area there are plenty of dog walkers and people whos job it is to care for such pets. Try craigslist classifieds and find someone locally, it will benefit you in the long run.

I agree, Jeff, and I was really just trying to be funny! I have some students that are interested in reptiles, and might be able to, with parental consent, get them to look after them in the future.

Thanks again. (I thought I was funny.)

You could put them in plastic shoeboxes, secure the lids with duct tape, stack them up and place a heat pad leaned up against one end. That is it. No real danger there.

Would you agree that more could go wrong bringing them with you? More chance of escape. More chance of being knocked around, etc?
