I've been warning you all for years about the cloud that you big snake owners have cast over us all. You all have totally effed up the entire hobby. I got out of it all a couple of years ago. I notice that Burm, Retic (and several others)owners are to this day just breeding their snakes like there is a never ending supply of buyers. You all mostly never acknowledged the mortal damage they were doing to the herp community. All I ever heard were excuses.

I'll not be signing this. It's to bad it's come to this.

I do not own any of the larger constrictors, but i fully support those who own and breed these wonderful animals. We need to stand together to make sure that future owners and breeders get the chance to work with the animals they love. What will happen to you when a new bill goes after the animals you own? Are you gonna just let them take them away from you, or will you fight to keep the right to own and breed them? The only ones that have created a black cloud over the industry are those who do not do the proper research before purchasing a giant constrictor, or python, and keeps them in enclosures that are not properly reinforced to hold such animals, and said animal escapes from enclosure. Please just try and show a little respect for those who are trying to save a way of life that means so much to them.

Way of life??????? These guys have shoved it up the rest of the whole herp hobby and now you want me to show respect???????

I'll tell you whom I'm really bitter at are those in this hobby who didn't have the balls to call a spade a spade and callout those who have been effing up this hobby for over a decade now. There have been years of abuse by two groups. The "big snake" owners who breed and sell to anyone who comes up with the money, and those who keep sell and trade "hot" herps. Both groups are loaded with irresponsible keepers who own them for the worst reasons. Every time I see a huge snake draped around someone like Britney it just reinforces that unfortunate generalization. I totally understand that there a huge number of smaller boas and pythons that don't deserve to be banned but we have allowed a couple of groups of keepers to paint the whole hobby as a bunch of freaks. I for one totally resent that.

IMO "big herps" and "hot herps" should be treated like elephants or tigers. There should be licenceing and extreme restrictions on both. There are far to many STUPID and irresponsible keepers in both groups and unfortunately most of the general public thinks that you all and I are part those groups too. So yes I'm bitter. Rant off.................

Reading your dribble is awe inspiring..... You have no real understanding of life. You blame people that keep and breed the large snake species? Wow, your ignorance is STUNNING to say the least!

I think you need to save the human species from itself....

Every time you see someone holding a big snakes it supports your retarded perspective on life.

Please, go wrap up with your snuggie and make sure your pet stuffed animal his its own snuggie too.

I know I don't need to explain what a Snuggie is to you now....do I?

speaking for other people?

Do you actually think that I only keep Large Scary snakes?

I keep TONS and TONS of reptiles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Size does not matter!

If you think I mindlessly pump out thousands of big snakes into the hands of anyone then you are RETARDED!

Period!

You are so weak to think that other reptile keeps are faulting people that keep big species.

You are quite the novice.

I hope Santa love you this XMAS!

I couldn't agree with you more. Its a shame folks like him are out there "representing" the hobby. The ignorance and anger dripping from his posts give them no credibility at all.

Avalanche Dec 25, 2009 11:18 AM

You are coming off as an ignorant little child. Try actually discussing things like an adult and stop insulting people who dont share your view, which is a sign of ignorance and intolerance.

If you are really part of the "NERD" organization you are reflecting on the hobby and your business very poorly. We have to make sure our hobby is responsible and you clearly aren't interested in that.

"SATAN" ? LOL!!

nagrag Dec 25, 2009 03:57 PM

The problem is that people like you seem to have your mind made up. You have zero data - none, however you claim you know what the problem is. Frankly, people like you voice nonsense opinions.

Like I said in another post. If you are not a keeper of large pythons over a long period of time, then frankly you have no idea what you are talking about. You don't have the data, all you have is a smart ass opinion. People like EvilmorphGod have lost all sense of understanding of people like you because you come off as holy and almighty, yet you clearly don't have a clue what you are talking about.

If you want to have a discussion try asking questions to people who are experts on this topic. Try being considerate of people who have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars and time into keeping and breeding large constrictors. Try to be cooperative and actually learn something about these reptiles and the keeping of them.

You and a few others like you seriously seem to be severely mis-guided because of a few incidents.

If you knew how many people I know that keep large constrictors and keep them well. If you knew what I knew about these animals and their keepers, then I know you would not have your foolish and misguided opinions. But it seems you have your mind made up and that you don't want to learn what I know (as fact - not opinion).

That is a sad thing. People like you acting high and mighty with zero data or real life experience to back you up. Very sad indeed.

I love this country and in God I trust. I am confident that we will not have our rights stripped away, so people like you will still have every right to rant and rave and act nuts for a long time to go.

BTW - I would like you to show me data on who buys snakes form NERD, or Bob or Prehistoric or me for that matter. Do you know who I sell to? Do you even know who I am (doubt it).

Please open your mind and learn a little bit about this before continuing to sound so silly.

Merry Christmas!

Just a random thought from me. I've two burmese pythons, I don't breed them or anything. I'm just in it because I like the snakes, and enjoy keeping them. When I bought my second Burmese online, although I was not asked vigorous questions about my capabilities - on many of the websites I went to, there were paragraphs typed informing people what they are/were getting into upon purchasing one of the reptiles.

And as in any case, people are always looking to lay blame. If I go buy any animal or reptile from any person, and it was not taken care of, or let go to kill someone, in no way was it anyones fault but my own.

Sure - Breeders could sell VERY, VERY, selectively, but that wouldn't necessarily keep people from picking up a Burmese Python from craigslist for free, or for 50 bucks or so from someone who was in a hurry to get rid of one.

CauseandEffect Dec 25, 2009 11:48 PM

And another thought. - I do think laws should be stricter for that, and more publicized. A few idiots letting their snakes go should not bring ruin to (three billion?) dollar industry, or have peoples rights stripped from them who have always taken great care of their animals.

Avalanche Dec 26, 2009 02:59 PM

Its refreshing to see someone on this forum with a bit of common sense and the ability to read and understand a post without resulting to name calling. All that being said you are absolutely correct, people with the means and experience to keep these large constrictors should (and likely will always) be able to. As far as I know nobody want to keep animals out of the hands of the correct keepers.

There is a HUGE problem with the herp society as a whole and its a self created issue. Animals like albino burms and retics should not be for sale to the general public at a Petco or through unscrupulous breeders who only care about making $50. These are the animals that get let go or end up for adoption. Like I said, I can get Burms, Retics and Red Tails from free all day long, do we really need to be breeding these things further? I can understand breeding new morphs.

The clowns here can scream and yell and insult people with different views all they want, it wont help the matter.

natsamjosh Dec 29, 2009 12:18 PM

You keep saying there is a "HUGE problem", but why? I won't argue that no idiot has ever released a large python, but if it happens on very rare occasions so what? Unless you provide some evidence to back up your assertion that these releases happen as often as you are implying, why should anyone even listen to
you? (BTW, I don't own any large constrictors.) And I've seen just as many corn and king snakes on my local Craig's list, so your argument, imo, holds no water. If you are going to respond that corn snakes don't kill people, at least please cite the statistics on how often people are hurt/killed by large
constrictors. Just so you know, there has NEVER been a person in the US killed by a large constrictor outside the owner's household. That means you are more likely to get hit by lightning and then get attacked by a grizzly bear.

There is a little document called the Constitution that is supposed to prevent laws based simply on an individual's opinion. For you to believe that laws should be made based on your opinion that certain animals "should not be for sale" is ridiculous. Bottom line is that according to the Constitution, the government has no business involving itself in activities that don't impede others' "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness." And your argument isn't logical. There are irresponsible and unscrupulous people involved in every facet of life and in every endeavor known to man. That doesn't
logically lead to the conclusion that every endeavor should be regulated. How many children per year are injured/killed by irresponsible (or just downright evil) parents every year? (Do a google search on child abuse if you are interested.) Should we start strictly regulating parenthood? How many children per year are left in hot cars to die? (Hint, it's way more than deaths caused by large constrictors.) So should we stricly regulate parenthood and cars? How many idiots get behind the wheel and kill innocent bystanders? So should we more strictly
regulate cars? How many children die because they weren't wearing a bicycle helmet? Should we start regulating bicycles?

Your focus and blame, imo, is totally misplaced. The enemies are the corrupt Dept. of Interior and the Animal Rights wackos that want to ban ALL reptile ownership. Ironically, perpetuating the stereotype that boa and python owners are irresponsible rednecks who are likely to release their snakes is going to destroy the ENTIRE hobby even more quickly. Be careful what you wish for.

Avalanche Dec 26, 2009 02:49 PM

I hate to rain on your parade, I have been keeping and breeding reptiles for 25 years. I'm an adult with abundant experience with large and small reptiles of all kinds. Just because I dont put a silly signature with my snakes on it doesn't mean I dont have any. Its funny how the people who are screaming about facts and data dont really have any of their own.

The ignorance here is overwhelming, the government already has its data, they dont need anymore.

EvilMorphgod Dec 26, 2009 07:39 PM

He has a point about acting high and mighty..... Swinging that around like a sword in here is not exactly what we want to hear!
As far as me acting professional..... I don't really care. I can act VERY professional at times and there are times where there is no way to act but otherwise. When I hear someone preaching what basically sounds like non-sense then it's time to play. I sink to the appropriate level. When I am being accused of selling people snakes that kill them, ruining Florida's Everglades, making the Everglades...UNSAFE, selling snakes to babies cause I am a murdering money grubbing BEAST, making everyone look bad blah, blah BLAH then I have to assume the right level of intellect....

I do not come here to troll for business, to try to look good to my peers; I look at things that may be interesting to me and I like the same snakes that everyone is here for. I happen to breed lots of snakes and I love to show them off since I am quite proud of my snakes; I love to hear what people may think about them. I like to see what other people make and it inspires me to say the least!

Ragging on me as being a representation of this business is idle dribble. I do not claim to represent this industry...... If we want that then I look to people such as Dave and Tracy Barker! I am however a serious animal person and that is my talent... many people know who I am and what I am about..

I did do quite a bit to help fight this ban though, and I accomplished something much to your dismay.

Tells us about your skills.... How have you come to know so much?

Ah, Vichris how nice it must be to be able to sit in your ivory tower and pass such wide sweeping and wise judgment on thousands of snake owners. How great it must be to have the knowledge and foresight to know without any shadow of a doubt that I should not have the right to keep the snakes that I find interesting and have kept for years and years and spent thousands and thousands of dollars on to properly house, feed, and maintain. Over all of these years I never saw the gross negligence and error of my ways. I for one applaud your thoughtful, poignant insight based on what must be a vast reservoir of knowledge that could have only come from years and years of hands on experience and knowing all of us no good, low down large snake keepers hell bent on the destruction of the hobby. Only someone with your omniscience could see the audacity of people such as myself who with little intelligence and major personality flaws allow themselves to be involved in such a completely irresponsible, underhanded, low brow activity as the keeping of large constrictors. Up until your sage wisdom was so humbly set forth I was completely unaware that these animals were in the same league as elephants and tigers. And this even after several years working in the zoo field with large cats such as tigers, leopards, cheetah, and lynx. Yes, you are right and me, I am wrong. Your scholarly approach to the facts and wide ranging research has shown us all that yes, these animals, the very ones we have been keeping for years have, all along, been far more dangerous then the one or less deaths per year would have had us believe. It couldn’t possibly be the fault of the one or two people that keep their snakes in aquariums without lids, hand feed their large snakes, or medicate them alone. You are right it is my fault, and you are right we should be saved from ourselves by the government who has never been wrong in the past and whom themselves, much as yourself, can be expected to use ironclad logic, and hard science to save the country from being overran by ecosystem destroying, children eating, slimy, lidless creatures from the deep green equatorial regions of the netherworld (and of course, the people who love them). Yes, yes I see it now, 1 plus 1 truly does equal 3. Logic and truth. Truth and logic. Vichris, you truly are the master of both and I for one completely applaud your sage wisdom.

I guess if you want to say selling to irresponsible people is the problem then why is a ban on the item being sold the solution? If that were the case then:
Pit Bulls and a lot of other known potentionally dangerous breeds should be banned because of some bad owners.
Cats should be banned because of some feral cats doing damage to wildlife because of some people releasing them into the wild.
Guns should be banned because of some people who abuse them.
Alcohol should be banned because some people drink and drive.
Cigarettes should be banned because some people want to force other people to breathe their smoke.
In each of these cases there are already laws to try and correct the action of the people abusing these things. A total ban wouldn't work. Look at prohibition on alcohol. Didn't work.
I believe in freedom and with that comes responsibility by the user and owner as well.
At some point they will get to something YOU like and are BLIND to the potential problems of.
Maybe you will have another fellow hobbyist, smoker, drinker, dog-cat owner let you know "I TOLD YOU SO". Wow what a help that will be to you.
By the way I don't keep any large snakes so I don't have a dog in this fight BUT I am smart enough to realize this is not the answer and needs to be stopped now. Just because some people have been irresponsible doesn't mean punish everyone.
Ps-I think this will kill a lot of herp shows since it will be illegal to cross state lines with some of your herps. Why pay a high price for a table to just bring some of your stuff.

......to bring it closer to home? Oh and BTW I'm against gun bans. I don't know if you noticed but Guns are protected by the 2nd Amendment.

I'm not for banning big snakes either I'm just for extreme regulation. You all have effed up this hobby for long enough.

So I'm going to point out a few of the reason I'm so jaded to you big snake owners.

1) Big snake owners posing as pet friendly people and taking FREE Puppies and Kittens and feeding them to their snake because they can’t afford the food.

2) Big snake owners using their big snake as social statement, prop, or to gain attention.

3) Big snake owners who breed and then sell them without really telling the buyers just what kind of commitment they are getting into.

4) Big snake owners who release their snakes.

5) Big snake owners who have already cause many herp shows to close down because the local authorities have forced show vendors to purchase business licenses, breeders permits, and exotic animal permits. They have also brought negative attention from state Fish and Game Depts.

6) Big snake owners who have brought a huge amount of negative attention to the hobby by keeping snakes that they cannot control and have killed numerous snake owners and their friends and family not to mention the slew of bites and injuries these snakes have inflicted. I freely admit some of this negative attention was through no real fault of some owners but many are caused because the keepers don’t feed their snakes enough (because they can’t afford it or because it’s to inconvenient) or don’t want to deal with cleaning up the mess they leave.

Now frankly I don’t give a crap what any of you all think of me. Go ahead call me ignorant call me stupid call me uninformed. The fact is I am informed. To well informed. I just posted the personal experiences I have had with big snake owners. I haven’t even mentioned the “hot” herp keepers.

Chris Chris Chris. You may be against gun bans, but like large constrictors, they are constantly being attacked. Ask Chicago or NY residents if the 2nd amendment is protecting them.
Your points are EXTREME isolated instances that are right out of the talking points for HSUS.
I have been around reptiles all my life and I have never witnessed anyone taking in free household pets to feed their snakes.
It was somewhat considered cool in the 80's to walk around with a large constrictor wrapped around your body in public, but it sure isnt now. I have not seen anyone show off their snake in this manner in over a decade.
Breeders who sell their snakes dont have an obligation to grill the buyer on husbandry practices. It would be nice if they did, but this really falls into personal responsibility and freedom. The buyer has the responsibility to learn about his new reptile. Just as it has been done for 50 years.
No one I know has ever purposely released their snake. Accidental escapes unfortunately happen. You have been listening to Bill Nelson too much.
When municipalities pass unreasonable laws concerning herps, the herp shows have to evolve to be able to work with the laws. Large snakes are such a small part of a show, I cant imagine their lack of presence really affecting the show itself.
Statistics please on the deaths caused by large constrictors. If I remember right its 9. Since 1988. So 20 years go by and NINE people die. I cant think of any other cause of death that is lower than that. But that doesnt matter to you or animal rights activists.
Look. Even if all of the points you made actually happen, its the fringe not the majority that are responsible.
You already said you wouldnt ban guns because its not the gun that kills people.
You wouldnt ban automobiles or alcohol consumption right? Those two kill a lot of people. High School football causes a lot of injuries and an occasional death. Should we ban football? Does that sport "EFF" up things for the other sports?
I could go on and on about how things could be misused or accidents could happen that would result in an injury or death. But legislators are only focused on big snakes. Give me a break.

You said,
......to bring it closer to home? Oh and BTW I'm against gun bans. I don't know if you noticed but Guns are protected by the 2nd Amendment.

>>It was somewhat considered cool in the 80's to walk around with a large constrictor wrapped around your body in public, but it sure isnt now. I have not seen anyone show off their snake in this manner in over a decade.

Go to youtube you will find thousands of people with their large constrictors in bars, parks, streets, beaches, etc....... the 80's my a$$

This is bad, it is against the law and man was convicted. Is this it? Do you have anything else? This seems to be more about an isolated animal abuse case than a systemic practice of feeding dogs and cats to pythons and boas.

Nothing happened, the teacher never used the dead animals offered up by the local Humane Society, what is your point?

The video says it’s a rat, come on guy, didn’t you think any one would call you on this??

Dude, come on, this isn’t even in America and the snake is not a pet, it is a wild snake! Also, didn't the National Enquirer run that other picture of the man snack? These are some rock solid sources that you are citing, I can see you put a lot of work into your research.

http://www.yappi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=192819

Again this is bad, but again it seems to me that this incident has more to do with an individual act of animal abuse than a systemic issue with the python and boa industry and hobby. Was the snake even his?

Come on, first of all this isn’t even in the US, and are you really taking this as a credible source of information? Are you that freaking gullible?

If this is all you have then you suck, I feel like I'm reading the footnotes of a grade school research paper. Thanks for the laugh.

What I don't understand is the logic of it all. Pythons and Boas can not survive in 99% of the contenintal United States. What this guy doesn't seem to understand is the snakes that can survive here, are all those colubrids, that are being imported and bred at the same rate if not more than Pythons and Boas. Colubrids live in the U.S. and would fit nicely into our ecosystem(survive and make a negative impact). Does he think they will stop at big snakes? I think this guy probably just likes to get on forums and tick people off to try and distract himself from how miserable his own life is.Just my opinion.

Freedom is a right which is being taken away everyday and no one cares until it affects something they love. It will, eventually, affect us all.

I love how the blame just falls on everyones shoulders. This is the ridiculous fellow who pops up every now and again and causes a rucous just to stir people up then is gone for a while. It's nice to know that all of us who have ever even thought about keeping a large constrictor or a hot herp are to blame for this legislation being brought down on us like white on rice. If not for those of us and the organizations that fight the rule changing during the middle of the game then we would be up the creek. I for one am not going to fade away quietly into the night and let oppression take over my hobby because some un or ill informed senator has a hard on for showing out to try and make Florida's problem a problem for us all. If Florida wants to fix their problem then that's fine with me. I'm sure that there would be plenty of volunteers who would be more than glad to assist them in their plight. We have fought gun legislation for years in this country. We have fought time and again to keep what we love and love to do in this country. No one is forced to deal with our hobby(s). We truly represent the flag that was flown during the American revolution. "Don't tread on me" The symbol and the saying are as accurate as it gets to this day. We have Gestapoesk officials trying to make us meld into everyone else so we can be a faceless and uniform country these days. We elect morons into office and let the press run stories that are untrue about many many things. The time to stand up and be counted is here. The time to say enough is now. The time for freedom is upon us. I say fight fire with fire. I say we need local, regional and national news coverage of our stories. We need to show the country and the world that not everyone who keeps and or breeds is a monster. We need some positive publicity. We need our friends and family to stand with us. It's not just the keepers and breeders. It's our loved ones who will take the economic hit with us if things go down the drain. Our friends and family will make more numbers to take the battle to the legislators and turn the course of the fight more in our favor. Our forefathers faced a huge task in fighting for our freedom to be our own country, and now we are at the same crossroad for our personal freedoms. Never give up! Never surrender!!
