Got a new one

jf Dec 21, 2009 12:16 AM

I can't believe I started over! After 10 plus years of work with my rhino I reluctantly decided to find him a new home. Yes, call me a hypocrite but it had to be done. My son, 9, wants to get more involved with the care of my cyclura but my cornuta was just too unpredictable for a kid trying to learn. Some of you know some of the stories. Anyway I found him a good home and after some research went out and got a new one. I always wanted one of these when I saw them wild. I didnt want to get one this young though I knew it was the right choice to guarantee a well socialized lizard. So, here he is a 2yr old male 100% Caymanensis from David Blair, who once again was great to deal with.

Congrats!! Beautiful.
Do you miss your Rhino? It must have been really hard to let him go.

Rusty, it was bittersweet. He is big, sometimes friendly some times scary. They can bite really hard, oh the stories... He also enjoyed to sit in his crap and smear it around. Cleaning up after him was a drag. I like cornutas I just didnt connect with mine. There is something about the Caymans and that long head and spines that I really like.

Are the Caymens pretty much the same as the Cubans as far as temperment?
as for the poop smearing........that doesnt sound like fun.

That's a good choice regarding temperment. EVRY ADULT I'VE EVER HAD, BOTH MALE AND FEMALE, WERE EXTREMELY TAME AND PERSONABLE. This subspecies almost seems to like people!! Also ,if desired, this is an easy one to breed. Good luck and I'm sure it'll work out well..Cornuta that are very predictable and puppy dog tame are not as common..I have only 6-7 cornuta that are completely trustworthy with anyone. My others are "tame" but look at me "funny" sometimes...One in particular named Norbert was a maladapted lg male when I aquired him. After about a year Patty has him very tame with the old food reward game but when you're feeding he likes to get on your shoulders via the shelves. This I avoid as he makes me a bit nervous as I have a big nose but still would like to keep it...LOL

Owesame new ig mate and good job finding the old one a good home. Yep with a kid involved its better not to take chances. I personaly find cornuta the most apealing species, but hell yea nubila, caymanensis and lewisi are very interesting too in their own rigth.

Congratulations on the new one. Sorry that it did not work out with the Cornuta. Good luck with the new addition, hope you can keep us posted with the progress.

That's cool Joel! I am sorta jealous... are there things you'll do differently raising this one than you did with your hybrid? ...just from experience, not mistakes necessarily...

jf Dec 24, 2009 02:13 PM

Hi john,
Surpised? My hybrid is fantastic, I hope to replicate what I did with him. My cornuta was 3 when I got him and who knows what he went through up till then. I do know he was missing a toe, big scar on his for leg and nose and I spent a ton trying to clean him out inside. Binns has a hatch mate to my cornuta and his personality is very similar so I dont think its what I did or didnt do.

I am surprised... but wasn't this my idea?
I hope my boys are interested when they are a little older like yours.

Every time I see a photo of a cyclura yawning I think of the sound Godzilla makes. I wish someone could record a yawn and add that sound. KB
