Advice on bloodreds

wbcrows Dec 21, 2009 09:37 AM

Ok mostly a kingsnake guy but debating on picking up a pair of corns to start a project with. I've been been debating on picking up a pair of bloodreds, not sure if I want to try a blood red to an anery blood red or maybe an anery blood red to a hypo blood red.

Any thoughts?

"Any thoughts?"

Yes, any or ALL of those would be cool!. Just get involved with what YOU like, and not necessarily what you think other's might like. That's what really keeps things more fun, and less "work" so to speak. I really like the pinks and purples of the hypo lavender's myself, so that is why I'm working with those.

I am definitely a MAJOR Lampropeltis guy at heart too, but have had countless stuff of all kinds in the past too, and even now as well.

Rock on with some fun corn projects, whatever they may be.

Doug I do like the bloodreds, especially the hypos, what would I expect breeding wise as to crossing a hypo blood red to a blood red or a hypo bl red to an anery blood rd?

The first breeding you mentioned(hypo bloodred x bloodred) would give you an outcome of.....all offspring are 100% bloodred/het hypo.

The second pairing..(hypo bloodred x anery bloodred) would give you an outcome of....all offspring are 100% bloodred/double het for anery and hypo(ghost)

Bloodred was the term used when the morph was first found. It described the deep red and almost unicolor look that you see as the animal ages.

Then the simple recessive gentic trait of "diffused" (sides that have little to no pattern) was added to the mix.

"Bloodred" has an infusion of red, which is NOT a simple recessive genetic trait. I have seen diffused-sided normal corns which I would not call bloodreds (although some people might).

Hypererythrism (excessive red pigment) is inherited in a variable manner and individual snakes from a clutch can exhibit different amounts of red infusion.

So a "real" Bloodred is the combination of two traits. And there's a heck of a lot of variablity among Bloodreds regarding their looks.

Yes, they certainly won't all look the same, there is a whole lot goin on with those bloodred/diffused genes for sure.
