my own damn fault

fliptop Dec 23, 2009 06:16 AM

Well, I was keeping one of my female sockheads in a 20-gal tall (all I had available at the time), and the tall resin "branch" made a cool decorative element. Well, I haven't seen her in three weeks.

She's in there. She takes her meals from the opening. She's tidy as hell, too, considering she comes out to do her business (see 1st photo). I even found a shed!

I gotta figure a way to get her out.

monklet Dec 23, 2009 10:31 AM

Try flooding her out...very slowly and carefully though so she knows which end is up and where the escape is.

Beautiful snake

Jeff Schofield Dec 23, 2009 11:53 AM

Simple, they dont. Take a nice pic of her and display it on the side of her tank if you "have to see her" otherwise "do not disturb". Milks dont climb, they burrow. Pueblans were not even described to science til the 80s(thats 1980s not 1880s)...if they were easy to see and FIND this wouldnt be, right? Your only option is to increase the temps(both ambient and hot spot)and feed more regularly. But dont come here looking for sympathy that your milk isnt BASKING. By the way, if you look up sympathy in the dictionary its between sh*t and syphallis, lol, merry xmas!

monklet Dec 23, 2009 12:03 PM

Hmmm, the tone of that reply might be taken as rather negative. All the guy asked is how to get his snake out of its hide...aside from enjoying his pet, there might be lots of reasons for that. He never said anything about "display animals". But heck, what's the point of having a snake if you never even see it?

btw, only got two milks, an '07 Honduran and an '08 Black. The Hondo never came out until recently. Now he cruises regularly and the Black has cruised from day one...so there ;-P

Jeff Schofield Dec 23, 2009 12:12 PM

I thought to make the post both educational AND informative. I am a sarcastic arse sometimes, but my self deprecation usually makes up for that. You might let fliptop know what you are doing to SEE your milks, it seems important to him. Why do we keep them without HAVING to see them all the time?? Those reasons are as individual as we are...

monklet Dec 23, 2009 12:42 PM

Well taken

Don't know why the Hondo has come out of his shell. He's got good temp gradients and hide options in a tank. Maybe his curiousity about the world has finally overcome his innate caution. As for the gaigeae(sp?) dunno...maybe her innate caution has simply been bred out of her?

Jeff Schofield Dec 23, 2009 01:16 PM

You said HE is out cruising and SHE was more cautious....He is looking for something, slip her cocktail and she will be more receptive.....LMAO.

monklet Dec 23, 2009 01:22 PM

For snake's sake Jeff, she's only a little girl!

HondoAberrant Dec 23, 2009 02:30 PM

From reading this and many threads, Jeff is almost always antagonistic, and whatever you do is opposite of what he would do and therefore wrong.

Just ignore him, most of us do.

I have several Milks on display and they do fine.

Lively banter is good for the forum, this would be a awful place if we always agree. That said, I know when to apologize or dial it back unlike others on these forums. Who wants me to send em sensitive pants for Xmas?? If you arent chuckling read it again!

No, no one has beat me up physically in a long time. Verbally? There was one fellow a few months ago would got very sensitive when I mentioned locality coastals. I dont hold grudges and I dont take this very seriously. If you do......let me know and I wont follow up after you and hurt your feelings, LMAO.

I have a sense of humor most people enjoy
I havent been called little or small for a long time
I have never owned or made a hybrid or cornsnake
I havent lost a battle of wits to anyone on the forum
I think you have me mistaken for someone else

jeff schofield Dec 24, 2009 01:12 PM

LIreptileman continues to follow up only my posts on this forum and only negatively. Anyone can go into the "all the posts" section to see that he has never had anything nice to say about me or anyone else. I have never met the guy, and I cant understand the animosity. To have character you have to take the good with the bad. He offers NOTHING good. As a consistent member of this community people know me, my sarcasm. My sharp wit cuts both ways for sure, but I contribute to the forum. Before anyone judges what he has to say PLEASE look up his history and judge accordingly. Recently TD was called out and if anyone didnt notice I didnt pile on...for just this reason.

cn013 Dec 24, 2009 01:25 PM

Just let it be... you offended someone else and don't like it when they reply. You do tend to offer some insights periodically but it's the loose-lipped anecdotal posts that can also follow that seems to get you in trouble.

Not that you care..... errrr well wait if you didn't you'd let it bead off like water on a duck's back. You do not. Hence you care. Just censor yourself -- or better yet just wait a few minutes before replying. Come on man can't you just let it be this time of year? I personally know something about this... could have saved ALOT of irrelevant typing. This is an appeal to your sensibilities not an antagonistic poke in the side.

To try to garner some slight relevancy here... perhaps some of the smaller terrestrial milks can be displayed in a rock face with appropriate 'nooks and crannies.' I'd bet syspila at least would relish an almost natural alterna-esque cage construct. Can't you just imagine a little flash of red? Though if just put on top of the substrate anything in a milk's cage will be burrowed under.... so it's just food for thought and potentially a pain to sanitize.

Chris

Just to make sure I am reading YOUR posts correctly...so far you have:

Called me names
claimed my LOCALE milks hybrids
judge my experience
judge my sense of humor
judge my contributions to this forum
called me more names
questioned my size and my age

WHY? You defend the minority who DONT understand a joke and condemn a guy expressing remorse to those not blessed with the "funny gene"? Ever stood up and made people laugh outside the mens's room? If so, you should understand that not everyone "gets it", and thats ok. Anyone can see I am not mean-spirited and quite LOGICAL in my defense. Before you go throwing stones you should know that basically every snake you listed in your diatribe is by anyone's definition a HYBRID. Maybe it is you that woke up in the wrong forum. Either way, I wont lose a minute of sleep explaining to you and everyone who wants to listen to the history of Hondos.....just to watch you wince! Have a fantastic weekend!

RandyWhittington Dec 26, 2009 09:42 PM

Jeff I hear the USHS is looking for new recruits. You could join up and work on getting them to push senator Nelson to add Hondos and the other snakes you mentioned previously to the list of species to be banned. Then you would be a step closer to having others live and do things as you beleive they should.
Not sure what your final agenda is but hey it's a start.
Oh I forgot...LOL...that makes it all cool right.

I dont CLAIM your supposed MONSTER ISLAND MILKS are hybrids, but since you wont back up any of your breeding with ANY decent photos or data, I am sure you are hiding something. Judge your Experience? What experience, exactly? Judge your sense of Humor? Again, what sense of Humor? I have witnessed NO contributions to this forum from you other that the putting-down of other posters.

I am basing my opinion of your small stature by your INTERNET BULLY behavior, you have LITTLE MAN disease written all over you. I am basing my opinion of your age only by your immaturity now and in the past.

The heading was something about sensitive pants that you wrote, well "practice what you preach!" I will try to not make you shed anymore tears before new years, ok? Good God Jeff I can't figure you out, you can be a nice guy sometimes, and other times so rude.

I think you miss read fliptops post he never said anything about display animals, and I took his post as just pointing out a curious thing happening w/ his milk. I didn't see where he was asking for sympathy or even any advice, except maybe how to get the milk out of the hide it's found.
And by the way I don't need to look up sympathy in the dictionary.

As captive breeding became popular years ago I was trying to interest people in "difficult species". Right now we can captive breed most anything offered in the classifieds but the truth is that there are SOOOO many more interesting species the world over including many tri colors. My idealistic head thought that once we had NA milks down pat we could start working with some of the drop dead GORGEOUS tri colored tree snakes from the tropics.....many that dont even have common names! They are difficult to get because of both the logistics of each species and the low demand(never mind lizard feeding). Now I have tried(unsuccessfully,LMAO)to convince people to incorporate WC blood into their locality lines. I sincerely hope the drop in price(and interest) in Hondos, Nelson's, GTPs,etc will open up rack space for people to work with NEW species rather than just reinventing the wheel. There are tri colors that arent found under rocks, really there are....wish I had a pic...

brhaco Dec 27, 2009 12:29 PM

I certainly agree with jeff, in general-but I once hat a scarlet king that was kept very simply on aspen shavings with a flat slab of pine bark to hide under. She would lay out ON TOP of her bark slab, sometimes for hours at a time-in broad daylight. One in a million animal for sure...

Or does it seem like we want everything to be a point of contention?

For the love of milk snakes, I thought the post was kind of amusing, and her method of leaving her mess outside a mockery of me.

To Jeff: Dude, chill, I don't expect milk snakes to be out on parade for me, nor do I plan on harassing them into that role. I also have the ability to lift that branch if underneath it is indeed where she was. She's inside, and my need to get to her would be simply to inspect her (as in: FORTUNATELY her recent shed included the tip of her tail. As it's been dry with my heat on, if her tip didn't come off, I'd have to get it off for her, not easy to do when she's in that branch).

Rusty, once I get her out of the branch, it's getting disinfected and hanging with my White's Tree Frogs. I got it from PetSmart. I think it belongs in a fish aquarium. AWESOME snakes, btw. I was thinking about a honduran, but got a nelson's for the smaller size.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a milk snake!

antelope Dec 23, 2009 03:23 PM

I'm just thinkin' she Digs the heck outta the tight hide. I'd replace it with hide just as tight but that is easy to get into. I'd wait her out, put her food on the other side of the cage and let her come to it. No heat or water necessary.

DMong Dec 23, 2009 03:53 PM

That's what I would do too Todd. It will come out and be on the prowl during the night sometime very soon anyway, and it would be very easy to walk in and flip the light on to snatch it up then. The branch looks nice, but I need to be able to get to any of my animals for whatever reason at will.....period!
