Pic request...

meretseger Sep 18, 2003 10:55 PM

I'm doing a little speech on snakes for a class and I was wondering if anyone had a pic of something like a blind or thread snake that I could use to illustrate primitive snakes. A pipe snake would probably work too. I'd also like your full name for credit purposes. Thanks a bunch!

This is Blinky. She is a partially blind snake. That's okay. No need to use my full name.

meretseger Sep 19, 2003 01:18 AM

She's partially blind too, only has the one eye... she's a BRB though. I was actually going to bring her in for the speech and show her off. But then one of the other snakes I was going to bring in just attempted to consume my forearm, so maybe I'm having second thoughts? Nah...
.. Oh great.. my dog dug a chicken bone out of the trash while my husband was prying the snake off my arm... what a day!

redmom Sep 19, 2003 04:58 AM

T think he means Leptotyphlopidae, Anomalepidae, Typhlopidae, primatives such as those.

I am afraid I don't have any pics of these except for what is in my field guides. Sorry.

Good luck!

We're just joking... I think...

I know they're not commonly seen snakes, but I was hoping someone has a field herping shot of one or something...
(maybe I'll just buy some fishing bait and paint eyespots on it)

LMBO!!! That's pretty much it! I did have an unfortunate experience with, I assume, one of these little guys. I say assume b/c I don't think they are in my part of the county (South Carolina) but either way...it was an itty bitty snake. This was prior to me learning about and falling in love w/snakes. I was a counsoler at a summer camp and the guys had killed a baby copperhead right next to one of their cabins. That night, I was walking from the latrine to my cabin and saw something slithering next to me (in retrospect, I know the poor little guy was trying to get away). The first thing that came to my mind was the baby copperhead from earlier that day and I pounded it with the enormous Maglite I was carrying. I nearly woke half the camp....but as it turned out, it wasn't a copperhead.

I'm so glad that I have taken the time to know snakes and can confidently say that that episode will NEVER happen again!

Anyhow, if you would like for me to help by scanning in some pics from my guides, I can do that and will give you all of the information about the books and authors and stuff so you can credit them. Just let me know.

That's a funny story. I was an odd child, so I was the one at camp removing toads and bugs from the cabins to the relief of girls more squeamish than myself. I was also the only one to fail to run away screaming from black rat snakes in trees. I didn't particularly LIKE them back then, I was just dropped on my head or something and was never smart enough to be afraid of them. I also remember when I lived in Texas that during field trips and such, no one was allowed to go within 50 feet of a creek or river for fear of water moccasins. I sort of wanted to see one, but they did manage to scare me a bit with that one.
I've got books with pics of blindsnakes et. al, I just had a dumb idea to use pics that people I knew had taken themselves. I've got almsot all the other ones I need, but I may have to fold for the blindsnakes and use a book pic. I have to give the speech in... ooh, 7 hours!

WOW! Good luck! I have begun quite a collection of herp pics, but it's small yet. I haven't had the opp to go herping yet, but hope to soon (I just had a baby 3 mos ago, but hope to take my 7 yr old out to photograph nature, and, hopefully, snakes in the wild!)

Are there any others you need? I guess my collection so far is pretty basic, but they are from a zoo and a serpentarium so maybe I have something you will be able to use (except the primative snakes, of course...sorry!)

Right now I just need a hooded cobra and an andaconda :P. I have most of the basics myself.

redmom Sep 19, 2003 02:04 PM

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the cobra in the zoo enclosure.

This is the best I could do for an anaconda (I couldn't even get his head in the pic )...hope it helps. Again, Good luck!!!!

The pics part of the speech was the best part. I was going to bring in two or three of my tame snakes... HOWEVER... one decided he was no longer tame and two were in shed. So I had to bring in my tame hognose and my not-quite-so-sure tame blood python. I put the blood down on the table and start talking.. and he starts doing these melodramtic gaboon-viper-strikes at my chest (I'm about two feet away), scaring everyone in the class. I know he was bluffing (he let me pick him up afterwards), but it was no fun. The hognose was completley cool, but I think I actually made more people scared of snakes than not. Back to the drawing board...

redmom Sep 20, 2003 09:45 AM

Hey...at least you are doing something. Even if you only changed one person's mind...then you've suceeded! I would love to start going around to classes and schools and teaching about snakes! How did you get started?

This was actually my first time.. it's a college class and the assignment was 'give a 10 minute speech on something. visual aids are required'... so of course I picked snakes... and I worked pretty hard on it, but nothing went right in the end. I think I still got an A though.
I'd like to go to elementary schools and stuff but... I don't know how to get started either!

redmom Sep 20, 2003 11:04 AM

OH! Okay! Duh! Sorry

I certainly would've loved to have seen it! If I ever do get started doing presentations, I'll let you know! (BTW...check out the above pic of my baby corn, Little Ed! I did post it in the corn snake forum too, but I had to share w/y'all too!)
