waterproof stain?

twillis10 Dec 25, 2009 12:13 AM

I build a wooden cage and I was wondering if there was any specific type of waterproof stain I should use that would be safe for reptiles. I built the cage for bearded dragons a while back so i wasnt concerned about humidity. Now I am moving my black tree into it and I am concerned about the humidity destroying the wood.

I have always used regular Minwax stain, and then depending on what kind substrate will be used in the enclosure, I either use Minwax Polycrylic or Polyurethane to coat over top of the stain.I put one coat over the entire interior and then a second (or third if I have enough) on the floor for extra protection against urine saturation. Then I seal all the joints with clear silicone.
