Shedding trouble with Milksnake

Kylar Dec 26, 2009 01:47 AM

I aquired my milksnake four days ago and it had just started to shedwhen i bought it and it is still shedding today. Its sheds are comming off in small pieces. The humidity inside the cage is 55% and the temperature is 85 at the warm end and 78 at the cool The water dish i have provided is plenty large enough for it to get into it and ive been misting the cage every afternoon. Is there anything im doing wrong or should i do something else any advice would be nice.

You can put him inside a deli cup filled with moist Spagnum moss over night and all of the bad shed should be off. It works like a charm. I like to keep moist hide boxes in with all of my snakes. Cut the hole in the side of the tub so you don't lose the humidity that you are trying to create as fast. Hope this helps.

I agree with the moist hide advice. I too keep moist hides in all my snake enclosures and don't like the misting the cage technique too much. I like to let the snake choose his humidity level by providing a moist hide. Stress can cause your snake to have a bad shed as well and I have had some snakes have this problem soon after getting them and they were stressed about their new cage.(W/C while opaque) I think the moist hide should take care of the problem. Make sure the eye caps have come off as well and if the moist hide does not solve your problem I would try soaking the snake in LUKE warm water for twenty minutes or so and then assist with removing the rest of the shed. Remember we are 98.6 so if the water seems real warm to the touch it is too hot. Good luck.
