I got a V. dumerilii and was hoping someone was able to tell me how to sex one. I’m not looking to breed I’m just curious.
Thank you,
Tom

You should try posting some clear photos of the animals entire body, head shot, and tail base. Both top and side views. Hopefully your animal has some size to it where sexing might be easier and with some luck, the roughneck keepers will chime in.

I think this will work for the pictures of him/her. let me know if more is needed.
Thank you

sorry about the last post
Tom
It looks female to me although I don't keep the species. Female head shape, no 'bulges' and dusky dorsal patterning is what Im seeing.
looks a little small to know for sure. give it a couple months to grow and bulk up a little and check the base of the tail. mine didn't have noticeable bulges when i first brought it home, but they're now quite distinct.

How big does it need to be to know for sure?
Right now it is 12" SVL and a tail length of 18".
Is it just as simple to sex as the males have visible hemipens?
Thank you
Tom
total length of 2.5 feet, give or take? Mine was almost 3.5 feet when I could easily see hemipenal bulges, but he wasn't a whole lot smaller when I first got him, just skinnier.
The bulges are pretty distinct on adults, so yep, that's about it. I suppose head shape and full adult size could theoretically be used as well, as males are typically larger, but unless you see a group of them it's going to be pretty hard to make a call on that.
