UPDATE ON TREE MONITORS

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Dec 29, 2009 01:50 PM

As some of you know I purchased several groups of 3 species of Tree Monitors last Jan. 09. These overall acclimated very well and I was thinking that I would be successful in 2010 in breeding them and perhaps hatching babies in 2011. I've seen numerous copulations with both V. prasinus, V. maccreai, and V. kordensis. Beyond a doubt I've known for a while that I have gravid females of all 3 species. This morning as I'm doing inspections I noticed my gravid kordensis had laid eggs. I looked into the nestretreat box and dug up 3 eggs which look really good. Now only time will tell. This is my first time trying to breed the Tree Monitors although I have bred other Varanids. Here's a pic of the eggs and the female. I'm guessing under ideal conditions they're capable of laying several clutches so we'll see. Now the long wait begins...LOL

CONGRATS ON YOUR EGGS TOM. ITS AMAZING HOW EXPERT HUSBANDRY AND PROPER CONDITIONS CAN PRODUCE SUCH QUICK RESULTS. I KNOW THERE IS STILL A LONG WAIT TO REALLY CELEBRATE BUT HATS OFF TO YOU AND BEST OF LUCK... KEEP ME IN MIND WHEN THOSE BLUE TREES START PRODUCING,LOL. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We have gotten eggs many many times, but never had full term hatchlings (we are also cooking some now). It is a huge step, but there it is still a long wait, incubation is approximately 3 decades long : )

I would say that good eggs failing to hatch points to nesting and vitality issues. It is certainly frustrating.

Best of luck Tom!

Eggs look like they've got a shot. It would be nice if some 'tree' species would be CBB more often. Best of luck!

Hats off to ya Tom, you are very deserving of this after the time and work you've invested. Good luck with the incubation!

Hello Tom,
Congratulations! Your tree monitors look great and I would bet on all three species being gravid. All Our best- Mike & Mary
