bigblueox Dec 29, 2009 10:59 PM

i am wondering if you have heard of people putting a savanah monitor and an argentine black and white tegu in the same enclosure? i saw it once at a pet store while on vacation but i was answering more of there questions than they could answer for me, not real bright people. just curious. thanks for your time in advance.

Unfortunately most people cant meet the needs of just a monitor in an enclosure, let alone two different species. I wouldn't do it.

Cheers,
Mike.

they're two different animals with different needs. tegus need it considerably more humid than a savannah does on average. keep in mind the commonly available savannah is an imported animal as well, and tegus are typically captive bred. keeping them together runs the risk of parasites, not to mention the stress of being forced into contact with an animal neither species would ever see in the wild.

Pet stores do stuff like that just so they can put more animals in the available space. Its one of those situations where you might be able to put them together and they wouldnt fight, but it would really stress both of them out, which in the long term would cause all kinds of problems.

classic case of "just because they're not fighting doesn't mean they're happy" or thriving.
