Picture Request for adults, any species!

mattcbiker Jan 01, 2010 05:35 PM

Hey All. Again I haven't been on the forums here in about 3-4 years, but I recognize a lot of the same names here and there. Will probably be getting a bullsnake next week. Had a Kankakee locale a few years ago that unfortunately escaped and was never seen again . I know many of you have snakes worth showing off, especially those who have breeders. I've searched the forum and found a handful of pics, but not that many of adult snakes with people for a good reference of size and color, etc. I especially want to see how a larger, '7ish' foot adult looks being held.

I think it would be nice if we could consolidate some pictures. So if you don't mind and have some of your adults to show off, post up some pics, and list the species, locale, etc in the subject line when you post.

Thanks! My bull was only about 9 months when it escaped.... so not an adult but here's a pic to start.

Here is a picture of one of my girls. Kingsville TX local. She is pushing 7ft. Shes in hibernation at the moment. Not a good reference for size, but cool none the less.

Nice looking snake! Any size difference between males or females that you know of?

BigHairy8s Jan 02, 2010 10:39 PM

In my experience with the animals I have, the males tend to grow faster and stay a little larger than the females. But... I have seen some big females.

ginter Jan 03, 2010 10:17 AM

it has been my experience that the sexes grow at about the same rate until the females become reproductive at which point the males tend to out grow the females. The females divert more energy/resources toward laying eggs while the males can continue to put on size....... but as stated, I have some massive sized females as well!

monklet Jan 03, 2010 10:39 AM

Absolutely awesome...sure hope I can get my stubborn little female anywhere close to that size. She's an '08 and still only about 22 inches...very inconsistent feeder...it's driving me nuts.

...any chance she'll yellow up like your'n?

ginter Jan 03, 2010 11:42 AM

there was some discussion regarding the difference between jani and deppei a few threads back. If memory serves me, jani has a lower saddle count and can be a bit more colorful however the latter trait is subject and not all that reliable.

Your snake looks like it has the potential to get some nice color. I know that J. Cheery can speak to the extreme variability of this ssp. He has had various phenotypes over the years from blk & wht to green!

BigHairy8s Jan 03, 2010 11:49 AM

That is by far the most massive Jani I have seen in a while! By the way.. the female red in the pics above is said to be from your stock. I have some high red hypo Stillwater bulls that I bought from Ric Blair that could very well be from your lineages as well. Rich

monklet Jan 03, 2010 12:07 PM

Ha, what do I know, but it appeared to me to have a high blotch count and more square rather than rectangular for jani...but what do I know. To reveal my ignorance, is blotch count nape to vent or total?

ginter Jan 03, 2010 12:28 PM

don't worry.... ignorance is totally treatable..... it is stupidity that is a terminal.

Saddle or blotch counts are usually given snout to vent, but caudal saddles can also be noted depending on text.

I urge anyone who is interested in Pituophis to get on line and order Stull's graduate paper on the subject. It is old, dated, and has a few flaws but you can get it super cheap and stuff like saddle counts, scale counts, etc., never change, making this an invaluable resource.... And pay homage to one of the greats regarding the genus Pituophis!!!!!!

Not so long ago it was hard to come by ( I once paid $100 for a hard bond copy with a hand written letter by Olive herself ), but now that they have reprinted it you can get a copy cheap!

monklet Jan 04, 2010 01:44 PM

...been googling for it but coming up empty. Any hints?

ginter Jan 04, 2010 05:22 PM

Go to amazon.com and put in Olive griffith Stull. Her publication popped right up at $24.

Good luck

Awesome jani. And that's a great reference for the size of a large adult... just what I was looking for.

pyromaniac Jan 03, 2010 08:41 AM

Heh! That's the mama to my baby bulls! Almost 7 feet indeed! Glad I've made the investment in big cages.

BigHairy8s Jan 03, 2010 11:41 AM

My hold back male is over 200grams now. No power feeding. Just a small mouse twice a week. He has a brother I shipped to a lady in Cali who is heavier yet!
