Curious if any of you have tried the Alife or Zilla 1000 watt thermostats and if you prefer one over the other, only about $3 in price difference but looking the more dependable brand.

I would recommend a Johnson Control or Ranco unit, period. Available here on the classifieds.

They're interchangeable.
if you want to have complete confidence and not be doublechecking it regularly, go with Robyn's suggestion of Ranco or pick up a helix.
