Brains vs instinct?

Shaky Sep 19, 2003 07:16 AM

Does anyone consider a ratsnake species to be on average more intelligent than another?
I have a small, undeveloped theory about this: the more docility that is bred into animals, the lower the IQ.
I really think its just that the more wary animals only SEEM more intelligent, but what do you guys think?
How about Old World species?
Thanks,
-Jack

It's hard to come up with a good definition of intelligence. In fact, if you think about it, being wary is an instinct, but being docile toward humans is learned... so wouldn't the snakes are are cool around people be the smarter ones?

I've always judged the intelligence of my snakes by how much they watch you. Thus I judge my rat snakes to be smarter than any of my other snakes.
