Speckled King story

lytlesnake Jan 04, 2010 12:36 AM

Man the craziest thing happened. A couple weeks ago, I woke up one morning and noticed a tub wide open. A male speckled king 66% het whitewall was gone! I was up late doing snake chores the night before and must have done something stupid when I was getting tired. A snake can push on the Vision V35 tubs a little bit, but like I said, this one was wide open, so I'm pretty sure it was human error.

I tore the house apart. No sign of him at all. I kept looking. Nothing. Weeks went by. I was supposed to go out of town for New Years. Had a reservation for my dog at the pet resort and everything. Then when that Nigerian tried to blow up a plane and the TSA went all psycho, I had second thoughts. Later that day America West called and said they were backed up from the bad weather back East and my flight out was canceled. I could fly out of another airport to make my connector, or get a full refund.

So the morning I was supposed to fly out, there was just no way. Too many snake chores still left undone, too hectic, etc... I said, "Well, I'd happily give up the vacation for the return of my speckled king", like that was gonna happen. I headed home and called the airline for my refund. A short while after I got off the phone with them, there's a knock on my door... twice. My neighbor Bob says "Hey, Monty found this snake down here, it has a green belly". I said "Oh, bummer, my snake has a yellow belly". He says "You're missing a snake?". I said "Yeah".

So we walk down the street to the field next to my house and there, all rolled up like a ball python is my speckled king! He was alive. Looked like he was attacked by an animal though. There was a half inch area where his skin was torn back and looked like leather underneath, and a few other scrapes. Plus it was literally freezing the night before and had been pretty cold for the last several weeks. I live at +3,000' in the mountains. So the snake was pretty shocked.

I brought him home, sprayed him with Herptile RX and put him in a warm tub. He had a nice long drink of water and then proceeded to relax in various odd positions. I was worried that he had been clipped by a car or internally damaged from the animal attack. But after a few days rest, his energy level is much better and he's eaten a couple peach fuzzies. I'm amazed at what a tough little bastard he is! Sorry I don't have any pics, but my digital camera isn't working. I think it's the SD card. I'd love a new one anyway.

Wow man!, great story!,.....

That is just unreal that you found him way outside like that, and on the same day you thought about getting him back in place of the trip..LOL!..geesh!

It's really weird how some things work out, ain't it?

glad to hear it seems to be doing okay. The fact that it is eating is a great sign that things will indeed be okay too.

Good luck with the little speck, and make sure you KEEP it in the cage this time..LOL!

Great story and a happy ending too. I had something like that happen to me when I was a kid with a Cal king, the little bugger got out of his cage, couldn't find him for days. I get a knock at the door one day after school, a neighbor had found him in his backyard half way under his dogs water bowl. It's times like this that I wish our snakes came with GPS....LOL! Glad to hear you got your spec back and he is OK.

Holy cow. Glad things worked out for the best. I hope he makes a full recovery from the wound he got too. Bet he is spending LOTS of time on the hot side!

Yeah, the poor little guy is laid-up in post-op without any Vicodin too..LOL!

I am so very excited and happy to hear that your snake is back in your care! I bet if he could talk, he would have quite a story!!!

Great story my friend! Thank you for sharing!

Okay I just gave him a 1/4 Percodan.

But seriously, yes he is spending most of his time on the flexwatt side. Oh, and he's back in a closed style pvc rack in a sterilite 1756 tub. I know for sure he can't get out of that one!

His energy level still seems to be improving. He hasn't pooped yet, but other than that seems fine. Hopefully none of his digestive tract got squished. That's my only possible worry at this point, but I'm pretty sure it's OK. I'll give him another peach fuzzy tomorrow.

Glad you guys enjoyed the story. I was headed to Miami for the Phish New Years Eve shows. They have a (seldom played) song about a dog named "Harpua" which is one of my favorites. They didn't play it at any of the 4 Miami shows last week, but I've named the snake "Harpua" anyway.

Very cool, and I'm glad things seem okay so far, but I would strongly suggest that you ease up on the feeding until you DO see him passing feces successfully. Who knows what trauma may have happened internally, know what I mean?. No sense loading the guys little system up with food and make it work harder until you know for a fact it is in good working order.

Doug, I was just going to suggest the same thing. Stress, cold, injury. I would wait a little bit as well to make sure all is working as it should. What a great story though!!

SDeFriez Jan 04, 2010 07:36 PM

Great advise from Doug and Joe, would follow their advice by all means. Give him some down time and see how he's doing after he has had to recover.

Thanks for the good advice guys. I was thinking the same actually. I'll watch for poop and not feed him again for a while. If he doesn't pass something pretty soon, I may take him for an x-ray at a good herp vet I know nearby. This vet surgically removed an abcess from one of my kings a few years ago, so I know he's totally competent.

Maybe I'll give him a warm water soak for just a few minutes. That often causes them to poop.

joecop Jan 05, 2010 12:32 AM

Let me come and hold him. That will surely get him to poop all over me. Mine do!

antelope Jan 05, 2010 01:28 AM

LMAO, no doubt Joe, have your girlfriend, wife, best friend, Mom, anyone close hold it and whammo! You're all in deep doo-doo!

First I soaked him for a few minutes, then sprayed him in the sun for a while, then put him back in the tub with a bunch of clean paper towels. Checked back 15 minutes later and there was poop! Changed paper towels again, etc... He seems do be doing really well now.

He's got a fair bit of scale damage here and there. Looks like the animal was playing with him, plus maybe the weather didn't help. Is there any moisturizing cream you guys would recommend? Not an antifungal like the athlete's foot stuff, but something to moisten up his scales. What about pure Aloe Vera followed by a small amount of greaseless moisturizing cream? Obviously I'd want to avoid getting it near his head, and would only rub from front to back to avoid ripping scales.

I'm still gonna keep him on peach fuzzies and not feed too much for a while, just to be on the safe side. He does need to put on some weight though, so I'll feed him just the right balance.

SDeFriez Jan 05, 2010 03:45 PM

Great news, glad to hear he's on the road to recovery. You might wan to ask your Vet about the cream, wouldn't want an infection to get started.

If I start to notice his skin getting worse and not better, I'll make an appointment with the vet. He works for Banfield which is inside the Petsmart, so I'd pretty much have to make an appointment just to talk to him. But despite where he works, he's an awesome herp vet. He said he doesn't get to work with enough reptiles at that place though.

Maybe I will apply a small amount of antifungal creme. I bought an odorless/greaseless athlete's foot creme. I know that stuff doesn't hurt them, I've used it before.
