Trap Boxes?

NorthamExotics Jan 04, 2010 11:50 AM

Does anyone have a good source for trap boxes (or plans for that matter)? I have an older one from Precision Caging but their service was slow and their site doesn't look current. The only other 'commercial' one I have seen is from Boamaster. Any comments or advice is appreciated.

Might help the forum users if you defined Trap box, as many people call it something else. At least I always did, I used the term hot box, but that's me.

As far as your question no I don't have any plans but I know there are a few other companies that make them. Tongs.com may or may not...all my other links are unavailable at work.

One would think you could easily build something simalar or suited for you. What species in aprticular are you working with? Or what group?

Here’s an old post about a hide box that I made. With a sliding trap door, it is used as a shift box too. It was very easy to build. Take a look for an idea and maybe just build your own.

Trap box, shift box- exactly what I'm talking about for small rear fanged species. I was hoping to get a lead on a commercial one as I don't have the tools to build one. Everything in my garage is geared for mechanical repairs, not carpentry. Thanks for the link!

If they are small and you only need it to transfer them to a holding box for cage cleaning you can use some things that you only need a pair of sissors for..
For my copperheads I use a Cool Whip tub with a small hole about 1/2" up the side, just big enough for them to get into the tub, and the lid is taped to the tub and the tub is in the cage, lid side down. I use news paper for a substrate so I can see if the snake is in the tub or under the paper. When I need to shift them, I just put another Cool Whip tub with out the lid or holes over the one the snake is in.. Presto, he is "trapped". I have two trap tubs per snake, one I keep spag moss in and one without. The one with the moss goes in the cage when the snakes go "blue" so they have a humid hide.
So far it works great, no stress to the animals, me or my wife...

What a cool little technical solution. I wonder if it might fit more folks' aesthetics with a little tweaking, perhaps w/ some of that moss, or coir, siliconed or glued on?

Nice contribution, thanks.

I've done similar things with deli cups countersunk into "fake rock" - one cup is the receptacle for another cup which is the water bowl, the latter being very easily switched out for hygiene. The first cup is adhered to the expanding foam that constitutes the "fake rock". One can also use this technique with potted plants on the back wall, allowing some provision for drainage.

Cheers,
Jimi

Here’s an old picture from a project I posted about. This is a waterbowl and three plants made of spray expanding foam on a piece of plexiglass. It’s got these plant holders that are mounted and the plants in pots just nest into the others. Very easy project, painted with that faux rock texture paint. It’s been in use at least a year or so and holding up fine.
