Response from Texas Senator John Cornyn

Slacker6848 Jan 04, 2010 12:49 PM

This is the response I got from Senator John Cornyn from Texas today

Dear Mr. Greenberg:

Thank you for contacting me regarding legislation to regulate the importation of certain exotic or non-native animal species. I appreciate having the benefit of your views on this matter.

As you know, several measures that would regulate the importation of exotic wildlife are currently under consideration. The Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act (H.R. 669) would direct the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to evaluate the risk of a nonnative species before approving it for importation—a measure aimed at curtailing the invasion of local ecosystems by foreign species with no natural predators. Similarly, Senate Bill 373 (S. 373) would designate python snakes as an “injurious species” under the United States Code, thereby banning the species from being shipped or imported into the U.S.

I understand the importance of protecting our environment and population against the incursion of invasive species; however, I am concerned that these measures may not provide the flexibility required for Texas’ legitimate wild and exotic animal enterprises such as the pet industry, zoos, game ranches, and wildlife conservation activities. Historically, state laws and local ordinances have been established to regulate pet and wildlife ownership, and I believe that governance over this matter should be reserved for state and local entities.

I appreciate having the opportunity to represent the interests of Texans in the United States Senate, and you may be certain that I will keep your thoughts in mind should the Senate consider these or other relevant pieces of legislation during the 111th Congress. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator

Looks like the Senator from Texas understands that this should all be handled at the state level.

Sometimes you just have to love the Republican philosophy of the government keeping their HANDS OFF!!

We need more of this. This guy is DEFINITELY on board with our cause, and for the right reason!

Perhaps some of us will use Senator Cornyn's response within our communication to our congress men and women to share why S373 is such a bad bill

I know that this senator is going to be on the side of freedom, small government and local control on this issue. He is one of our friends on this issue... However, what really irritates me is this;

Every single letter that I have seen from any senator on either side of this issue has been a copy and paste position statement and never a true answer to the constituent. That really really irritates me.

You & Me Both Jeff , that says to me that as a constituent ,
my opinion really does not matter.

My / Our Senators really are not hearing

"The Voice of the People"

There is a large buffer between a Senator and his Constituents

That buffer is a very large Senatorial staff

Is the message from the Constituent on any issue

reaching the ear of our Senators ???

It takes days, if not weeks to get this "form letter" response back. I have to assume that they receive TONS of emails, faxes, phone calls, etc.. I can't imagine the members of Congress have time to respond personally to each one. In fact, I would guess they have at least one full time person responsible for sending back these form letter replies.

I totally understand the frustration. And that's why we have to make every punch count. If we can write a letter that actually grabs the attention of a staffer, maybe that letter WILL end up on the desk of our representatives.

So keep up the great work guys!!

THe only responses I've gotten via email were form letters... they all have the same exact language..... I have gotten several call backs from my Senators and Representatives offices... I think direct contact is the way to go.... One of the Aids I spoke to was in Awe when I described the size of this industry..... He never realized this bill could affect so many peaople in a negative way..... He assured me he would bring this to Senator Landreneu's attention...
