Ok guys, I have been out of the loop for a while.
When did these guys become so popular?
And has anyone had any Genetic side effects that everyone was worried about a couple years back?

I personally started seeing these pop up earlier this year. I think the first batch all originated from Boneyard Reptiles if my memory serves. I would guess thats where most of the ones you see for sale in the classified might have come from but then again I am ony speculating. I think they are very cool but the price tag is more than I can swing these days. I have always had a soft spot for Texas rats as I grew up in the dallas area they were every where as a kid. Heck I still have a trio of leucistics and normal hets today and probably always will. I would love to add the scaleless to my group in a year or so when the price becomes a littel more affordable for me. To answer your question I have not heard of any health issues related to the fact that they are scaleless.
I recall some other scaleless species being offered awhile back, but cant remember exactly what species, or even genus!!
AFAIK it really 'started' when BHB started their scaleless corn project, and asked a few k per tail. Everyone realized they could sell their scaleless for thousands or something.
Only my observations though, there mighta been more I didn't see.

Yeah, from what I can recall seeing, Brian(of BHB) started the ball rolling on the scaleless snakes. Corns, Texas x Black rat are what I see offered for sale. I even saw a totally scaleless Death Adder as well a good while back.
To be quite honest though, the scaleless animals do absolutely NOTHING for me at all in the "must have" department.

Ditto here. I once saw an albino scaleless Western Diamondback. What's the bloody point of that?

I'm Dutch. Somebody shoot me.
Might've happened on accident. But regardless, one person's trash another's treasure, as long as it doesn't hurt the animal.

Scaleless Rats have been around for over 25 years.
Dr Bechtel was the first to produce them and proved them simple recessive many many years ago.
They have none of the problems you heard about. They shed fine. They eat fine. They require no additional care.
I got my animals from Tom Agosta who has been producing them since 2003. I have been producing them for 3 years.
Here are some pics.

Did Tommy ever succesfully create a scaleless "black rat" by crossing the Texas and Black?
dc
I don't think he's ever bred them back to black rats to try and make a scaleless black. 75% I think is the most he's done so far from breeding them to albino black rats. He's also got 75% texas from breeding to a lavender albino and has already produced a 75% texas leucistic scaleless.

awsome awsome awsome....
i need to get some, i have been waiting for people to start working with. I was scared to jump into them a few years ago, i heard all the rumors about them having shed and dehydration problems.
Thanks!!!
They will start coming down in price over the next few years.
We should also see some cool scaleless color mutations as well.

Yea, I can imagine that a Scaleless lavender Texas rat would be SICK. Or and Orange Phase Hypo... Yea, I cant wait
I just got a pair of scaleless. They are my first ratsnakes and man are they cool. I've always been a fan of the scaleless type snakes. They just really interest me.
I've already started looking for other ratsnake morphs to play with. I'm very excited about the future scaleless rat morphs.
Does anyone have a better picture of the Lucy Scaleless?
