Spade toad problem

alebron Sep 19, 2003 09:01 AM

This summer over 30 eastern spadefoots drowned im my pool. They ranged from 1 inch to 1.5 inches and only come into my pool when or after a rain. How can I prevent this.

It may sound stupid, but depending on what you are willing to do it could work. Some people had those fences that go around their pools to keep pets/kids/ect out. You could try one of those. Andy

Cover your pool if you can. They probably don't drown--they probably die from the chlorine.

I highly doubt that. Chlorine can harm them, but not overnight or anything. Spadefoots are not a species known for swimming. Therefore, when they go and fall into a pool either trying to breed to just rehydrate, they can and do drown. Same happens with toads. But I have taken toads from pools that did fine(alongside with dead toads). If it was the chlorine, then they would die as well, or at least get burns from the chlorine. Andy

well when you bild a pond, you must always have some kind of way for toads or frogs to get out. spadefoots usually breed at certain times. like you said, when it rains. so when it rains, you could place a piece of wood or something for them to get out. as long as they have a ramp or some rocks to get out, they should be fine. i think thatd be the cheapest way as well. hope that helps.
