Texas Senator Reply.....

Jlassiter Jan 04, 2010 10:57 PM

Dear Mr. Lassiter:

Thank you for contacting me regarding legislation to regulate the importation of certain exotic or non-native animal species. I appreciate having the benefit of your views on this matter.

As you know, several measures that would regulate the importation of exotic wildlife are currently under consideration. The Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act (H.R. 669) would direct the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to evaluate the risk of a nonnative species before approving it for importation—a measure aimed at curtailing the invasion of local ecosystems by foreign species with no natural predators. Similarly, Senate Bill 373 (S. 373) would designate python snakes as an “injurious species” under the United States Code, thereby banning the species from being shipped or imported into the U.S.

I understand the importance of protecting our environment and population against the incursion of invasive species; however, I am concerned that these measures may not provide the flexibility required for Texas’ legitimate wild and exotic animal enterprises such as the pet industry, zoos, game ranches, and wildlife conservation activities. Historically, state laws and local ordinances have been established to regulate pet and wildlife ownership, and I believe that governance over this matter should be reserved for state and local entities.

I appreciate having the opportunity to represent the interests of Texans in the United States Senate, and you may be certain that I will keep your thoughts in mind should the Senate consider these or other relevant pieces of legislation during the 111th Congress. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator

I dunno Jerry, at least we got a reply, and I will hold him at his word. I got the same one John, and for now it's the best we can hope for, I mean, he's a politician, even if he is from Texas, I didn't expect him to say Hell no, we gonna fight this damn thing all the way, boys! But he is recognizing that there are more than just snakes involved in this, hope the bird, fish, and small mammal people get on board as well.

Mine was quite generic. Something like thanks for participating in the process. Didn't even mention the subject of the bill.

yup. I got two back like that as well. One was a bit more involved as if it actually took someone time to read my letter.
I'm surprised we get anything more than:

...."awww....just sit down and shut up, WE know what's good for you people!"...
as if we're just too stupid to bother with.
Unfortunately,Tony, that is precisely the way a good number of our "representatives" feel about us.

It's too bad some of these senators and other legislators don't have a few herps of their own back at the house, but it seems to me that most folks that are real "into" people and public matters as a job, aren't much into animal matters.......sad really.

In their eyes we the people are nothing more than tools paying their way.

It's still WE THE PEOPLE RIGHT?

DMong Jan 05, 2010 02:18 PM

"It's still WE THE PEOPLE RIGHT?"

To be much more accurate, it would be.."THEY THE PEOPLE", meaning they the people that hate snakes anyway! Most of the general public would wish there were no snakes on the entire planet, let alone be be able to import, own, and make more of them as a means of income, or just a loved hobby. This will ALWAYS be our main problem as a whole.

Peace may sell, but really who is buying? We know our government isn't.

The TX letter has been the best so far that I have seen posted. Has anyone else received anything back in the positive vein?

I do want to take a moment to comment and thank all you guys for beating this horse. Of all the folks on the site, I think you guys are the most active. Then again I know my kingsnake kids are always game for a good brawl!

Yeah Cindy,......the Texas letter at least "sounds" the most promising thus far. The Florida letter from which the so-called "problem" stems doesn't look good at all. But none of this means much really until the proverbial fat lady sings.

I would have thought the boa and python forums would be constantly overloaded with this topic, but I guess you can only talk about this so much, the rest has to ultimately be waited on to see what the outcome is.

At least with this statement it looks like Senator Cornyn is against Federal legislation over this matter and believes that our state and local entities can govern this since it does not meet the flexibility for Texas' pet industry and such.....

I, too think it sounds better than most of the politician replies that I have read....

it sounds like a very positive letter. According to the good senator from Texas, USFWS could BAN IMPORTATION of python or other species declared injurious. The "ban importation" statement of his reply gives me a glimmer that there may be wiggle room for the captive bred animals already established in the US. It would mean revenue loss to importers, but not complete decimation of the large constrictors. That brings the fight to the state level, and thats where the large constrictor gurus will need to focus on the measures to be implemented to avoid "media disasters" IMO.

there's a lot to like about this place but it's getting really, really crowded. I've got nearly 200,000 people living in the Amarillo area now, and another 300,000 or so around the panhandle. *shudder* getting claustrophibic.

I don't have my rose colored glasses on, believe me, but I think the good 'ol boys know you can only push we the people so far, and income is what we need to keep right about now, not lose. Like Thomas said, we shall se.
