Please help, my leo stopped eating!!

jack7777766 May 25, 2003 03:51 PM

Hi,
I think my leo stoped eating, I move from my dorm back home and I changed her from a rubbermaid to a 10 gallon glass tank everything else is basically the same in the setup, however I dont think shes eating since the mealworms dont in her bowl dont seem to be getting consumed.
The only thing I could think it is, is that perhaps since the glass is so clear she doesnt feel as secure. I never thought I would prefer her in a glass tank but I like it better since I can see in it so much better. However shes not coming out of hiding either (for what I could see).
Anyway you think its the glass tank, do you think shell get over eat or am I gonna have to get her another rubbermaid??
She used to eat great before this and it was also mealworms from a bowl, in case you need to know.

Thanks
Jack

Hey,

I had Goliath, my stud male in a 10 gallon tank, for over a month. He wouldn't eat anything, was just eating enough to stay healthy. All my temps were fine, and I offered him everything from superworms, mealies, crickets, and silkwroms to pinkies. He refused everything except the pinkies, which he only ate about once a week. His entire life he's been a breeder stud, so I'm quite sure he was always kept in rubbermaid boxes. After about a month in the 10 gallon, I put him back into a rubbermaid, and now he's eating everything BUT the pinkies. So if you can, put your leo back into a rubbermaid. It did the trick for me.

I had a male when first purchased from a breeder didn't eat for 2 months. He lost some weight but never got to the point I had to worry about his health. It takes time for them to get use to new things. Some will adapt faster then others. If you like the glass, give her time. Maybe more hidding spots also. Put the food bowl by one of the hides. Just watch that she doesn't start to drop a lot of weight. Some weight won't hurt as long as she is nice and fat already and your not breeding her. Good luck.

When I moved my gecko...and I'm talking just a slight change in some things in the tank, she freaked out. They get stressed very easily and tend not to eat when they are stressed. I would say giver it time, as long as the tail is still plump and it's not losing to much weight. Also, if you havn't tried this yet, try feeding mealies by hand. My albino loves eating the mealies when I feed them to her, it seems to be the only way she really gets excited about eating. And my other leo won't touch the mealies, she just eats the crickets, while the albino seems to shy away from the crickets. So each leo is independent...so just give it some time...just make sure it doesn't get to skinny and start getting unhealthy. Hope this helped.
