Question about handling...

derekdehaas Jan 05, 2010 08:34 AM

I work with kings and milks but ended up getting a nice close to 5 foot female brb she is an '04. So I thought ok i'm gonna pick up one brb as a display and pet mostly for my daughter to get used to handling "large snakes" but not over kill large beside kings and milks. She has been doing great as for handling for about one month now and one day on thanksgiving night I brought out my "new snake" to show with some of my family....well about 4 or 5 people and the room was lit up to see better after while I let her cruise on the floor but she always bolt fast then I picked her up nip! on my palm. After that 3 weeks later my bro wanted to handle her again so I bought her out to the kitchen where there were 4 of us and a 4 year old as my brother handing the snake back to my wife and she nipped at my bro's shirt so she missed lol.
My question is are they scared around the crowd? I'm posting here because some of you have lots of brb and i'm sure you guys been around these snakes for a long time and know your snakes. Right now I am going to hold it off with my daughter handling her. She's only 2 and has never held that boa yet. Thanks.

My Male BRB is not spooked when i have him around my family, in fact, when i first got him 5 years ago, my niece, who was 3 at the time, wanted to hold him. I was a little wary at first, knowing BRB'S were known to be a nippy species, but i had had him for about 4 months at that point, and he had not once made an attempt to bite me, so i took him out, made sure my niece was sitting down, and i gently placed him in her hands and arms. I was sitting right by her, along with my entire family, so a total of 9 people in the room, and he was as calm as a mouse. Of course all snakes are different, they have different temperaments, so she could have been scared by the lighting and all the people. Enjoy your new snake

Actually I had her for almost 3 months but yes still new. Mostly new for me because this is my first brb. I'm gonna try and take a nice pic of her and post yes I know you all would love that haha!

That's exactly what happened to me. I set the snake on the floor and she bolt away and I went over and picked her up mid body and nipped at me then she went for it again and missed me haha!

Same story from me.

They are all individuals, some more prone to nipping, some more timid and reactive, some oblivious of everything but a re=odent in front of their nose.

Like already stated, they can be and are more likely to be more aggressive when being "captured" after being free. Also, when in their cage all settled in and you surprise them.

Of course, babies are typically more nippy.

All you can do is regularly handle your BRB and get a feel for it's temperment and Like Jeff will tell you - listen to your snake. ie, pay attention to it's non-verbal responses.

I am new to large snakes and currently only have one BRB, but I found with her if I pay attention to her reactions to what I or someone else does it makes it clear if she is ok with it or not.

I have not been nipped by her since the first day we got her. She makes it clear that she is not interested in fast movement and if we always move slowly around her she is fine with everything.
