Letter from Senator

jmw Jan 05, 2010 06:20 PM

Here is a letter from the ohio senator Sherrod Brown. Keep up the good work everyone. Good luck aswell this season. Everything is looking good here in ohio. Jeff Williams

ear Mr. Williams:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on S. 373, legislation that would ban the importation of various constrictor snakes.

S. 373 would ban the import of certain python snakes and label them an injurious non-native species under the Lacey Act. I can understand your concerns with this legislation, particularly its impact on pet owners and Ohio businesses. It is important to note that this legislation does not prohibit the private ownership of constrictor snakes, rather interstate trade and importation.

I will certainly keep your comments in mind should S. 373 come before the Senate.

Thank you again for getting in touch with me.

Sincerely,

Sherrod Brown
United States Senator

Things look good in Ohio. There's nothing in that letter that would lead me to believe he will vote against S373.

That, plus he's a Democrat could equal a vote in favor of S373. I'd be calling that office to ask for his official position on it. And if he's for it, the tools to change his mind are definitely available!

Just a recommendation...

What's written above is purely my opinion. In fact, MOST of what you read on the internet is someone's opinion. Don't take it too seriously

I have to agree. He seems to be beating around the bush as far as what his official stance is. It kind of comes across that he is in favor of the bill but doesn't really want to admit it.

He seems to be saying, "I understand your position, but don't worry - this will only affect interstate transport of these animals. You, as a pet owner, are fine. Have a nice day."

Perhaps he doesn't understand that an interstate transport ban is one of the biggest issues we have with this bill? Or perhaps he doesn't understand the negative economic impact that this bill will have for the breeders, keepers and pet stores in your state.

I know there are those out there who think that this type of legislation will not affect pet stores (both the "mom-and-pop" and "big boys". The fact is, they don't make a lot of money from the sale of the animals, a big part of their income comes from the sale of supplies and food. With reduced availability of these herps would come a reduced demand for the food and supplies necessary to care for them. This will result in a loss of income (even a loss of a fraction of a percent is enough for the big chains to react to). That profit will have to be recovered somehow and chances are you'll see an increase in the cost of the items that remain in demand (dog and cat food and supplies).

I just received the same exact response. This tells me that he supports s373. All is not well in Ohio.

I got that same exact letter. Shame that even our own senators don't take their constituents into account anymore.
