Mex Mex Present & Past.....

Jlassiter Jan 06, 2010 07:46 PM

These things have been a passion of mine for over 12 years.....Their popularity has died and returned a few times within the last two decades.....
I am sure they will soon be popular again with crossing of the many phases/morphs/looks......
With a lot of help from Shannon Brown and others we should see some NEVER seen before Mex Mex in the near future.....
Starting this year....Fingers crossed.....

Here are some pics of the present Mex Mex in my collection (along with some of Shannon Brown's breeder loan snakes) and some Mex Mex from the past that started my facination with these cool, hardy snakes......

I have this eversion for delicate captives that require to much attantion or work.

I used to keep MEX Mex and they were one of the hardiest captive snakes I ever owned.

It's been about 12 years now, since i sold my adults, and I think they deserve another look. They have the combination of being tough as nails and new colors morphs that can be the next big thing.

They are some of the hardiest kingsnakes there are.....Up there with getula, but don't get as big.....

With correct husbandry (choices and all)...They can grow fast and thrive.....

I have some 18 month olds that are over 30 inches and some that hatched in 2009 (6 month olds) that are close to 20 inches already......

Some hatchling Mex Mex are picky feeders but I've had Splendida, Holbrooki & Cornsnakes that were harder to get to eat than these Mexicana.....
And I think they will surely have a great "comeback"....I don't know about them being the next big thing as they have always been AWESOME in my book.....

I have never owned any, but from the sounds of it they are right up my overfeeding alley!!! LOL.

One of the most under appreciated and awesome snakes in the Mexicana group. They may not be a bright in color as some of the Thayeri or Alterna but they are awesome animals to keep and work with. You have some really nice ones there John.

That dark animal you have reminds me of a group that was collected back in the late 70's from a hillside right out of San Luis that Joe Lazlo had for a while.

Good Luck with them,

Cherryville Farms

Thanks John....
The black Mex Mex are some of my favorites too....
BTW....That one you posted is a female I purchased from you back in 2004.....Cool......

............so then that would conflict with wanting multifasciata..................no?

You know Jerry i do keep lots of other snakes and reptiles besides Florida kings. I just don't mention it much.

Zonata in general are not the easiest of captives and only for more experienced keepers.. they go off feed in early Sept and unless you feed them regulary that may not even make it through Fall and winter. But you already know this.

I don't have the time to get zonata to feed before a sale and then have half of them go through an entire winter before taking their first meal. If i did i would have been breeding lots of zonata. So cheers to you for all your hard work!

So I pick one pair of z's and that would be multifasciata because I think they are the prettiest and hardest to field collect of the z's. I am not interested in selling offspring. Just want to keep what i produce and give some away to friends who i know can handle their care. It is unerving to have snakes go off feed as early as august. I had this with rubber boas and it drove me nuts.

JKruse Jan 07, 2010 02:07 AM

yeah, going off-feed early (end of summer/early fall) can be nerve-racking for sure. That time frame to feed generously without over-doing it is essential...so consistency and diligence helps beginning in April all throughout that short window of time 'til August/September arrives. Prior to obtaining a wine cooler I honestly was white-knuckled until December came which is when I typically begin the brumation cycle and just keep the kids as cool as possible until then. So it really is un-nerving with most z's......true.

Wish I had the time to actually keep more myself -- outside of what I work with is just a single killer panther cham and a couple leopard geckos that my daughter tinkers with every year as a side gig to sell at a few of the shows I attend. I'm sure down where you are there's greater ease of having outdoor pens/enclosures and better year-round temps. My wife and I contemplated on relocating to Florida last year but plans fell through -- I had the outdoor chameleon pen all planned out too. Could be worse though -- could have a wife that hates herps, so I count my blessings every day.

The ol' boy is really getting up in years, and it will DEFINITELY be a sad day for the herpetological industry when he does eventually pass away. Bill was born in 1910, so that now makes him 99-100 years old!.

What a sad thing to have happen.

There are several venoms that mimic the effects of diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimers, polio, Myesthenia Gravis, etc. If one of the core principals of homeopathic medicine is correct, (let like be cured by like) minute doses of these venoms (what Haast has done) could possably "educate" your immune system to provide a simmilar immune effect to those diseases as the early indicators express themselves. Thanks to Haast, we may one day find out. With all of the useful health giving proteins that have been discovered in snake venoms, I think Haast may have created an interesting area of potential discoveries. Ninety nine years old, man, there's something to it.

DMong Jan 08, 2010 12:36 AM

Yeah, Bill Haast has blazed a trail for all sorts of future venom work. Like you mentioned, there are many strange beneficial medicinal properties to the enzymes and proteins that different venoms have. Cool stuff for sure!

I really have never had much problem with zonata going off feed, here in NM or in S Cal. I've had multifasciata, parviruba and have a pair of multicincta now. Some hatchlings can be a challenge at first, but take to feeding pretty fast with a few tricks.
